um would anyone happen to have any info on spartan government? more specifically, i'd like resources to answer an extended response essay: "explain the opportunities spartan citizens had to participate in political life?" apart from the assembly, gerousia, kings and ephors, wat else IS there? and how do these things show the opportunities to participate in political life?

we had to do that essay a while back - so i'm thinking back for this now...

ummm you'll find that the Spartans were able to be a member of the assembly when they reached 20 (i think...might be 30 - not sure off top of my head) and that was a basic right for all Spartan Citizens then these men could be Ephors which were elected for one year out of the people.

Um trying to remember who it was - Xenophon i think - said something about the Process of electing Ephors from the people and the problems inherit with this - in that passage it says somethign about giving common Spartans a chance to becomes invovled in government.

You would also need to talk about women - as they were Spartan citizens also (i dont think you would need to mention other groups within sparta such as the inferors or Helots due to the wording of ur question) but women were considered Spartan Citizens pretty much on equal citizenship terms as the men -
However, they were not able to becoem invovled in politics - so you could mention that while me where given ample change to become invovled in politics and mabye have a paragraph which talks about that.

Sources wise i'd look at Bury and Meiggs which have a huge section on Spartan govrenment and they allways ahve some great quotes. If you can get ur hands on it Paul Cartledge wrote a book about Spartan government which is excelent (hes a great Spartan historian if ur looking for a modern one) - not sure what it was called but it was excelent.

Hope all that helps
melissa
