I see you've already worked out your problem - but yes, just like to add that you HAVE to complete the preliminary counterpart to a course before you can study it in the HSC.
That's the reason why I'm doing Preliminary Society and Culture this year. I was so damn terrible at Ancient History and hated it to pieces.
It's not a huge deal for me though, as I'm on Pathways anyway due to illness. So I just do two HSC subjects and one prelim, and next year I can finish everything else off.
