Tense and expression (1 Viewer)

How can I maintain the right tense and expression throughout an essay? I tend to change it alot during exams. Any tips beside lots of practice?? I'm in Advanced and I am marked down for it.
Im from a non English background but born here in Aust and this seems to be the biggest problem I have :L

Well, you just have to be more careful with your tense then.

And expression derives on your style of writing.
