hmmm purpose would be related to uselfulness whilst motive is more ummm like an underlying intention....sorry this is a terrible attempt at an explanation...:shy:

No. If you talk about purpose you talk about motive and vice versa.

Why did they write it and what did they have in mind when they wrote it?

Things like format (nature) of the source and language of the source indicate this.

When i look at it i see the purpose as what they were trying to achieve, ie. inform, record, show how great such and such was
whereas motive was why they wrote and incorportate some biased.

Say for instance you were looking at a german historian who loved hitler - his purpose woudl be to show how great hitler was and his motive was his love for hitler - and mabye fear that if he didnt' writie a decent account he would be :chainsaw:

if you had an american historian on the same topic his purpose woudl be to show how awful hitler was because they fourght against him.
His motive was then hatred of hitler - they do very much work hand in hand but look at bit outside the norm because they dont jsut refer to why he wrote - look at what they wanted to achieve.
