I just realised my paragraph on Antonio is ass and not nuanced at all I just keep flaming him for being self-righteous and antisemitic
but like i need to offer insights into his emotions and experiences as well

like in the beginning he says he's sad and he doesn't know why
and people are saying he's in love with bassanio but they can't be together because of the context
but i think that's too much of a leap to actually write in the essay. because, i mean, that wasn't even considered a possibility until centuries later, and I doubt Shakespeare gave a flying fk about that shi if i'm being fr

someone tell me now or i'm actually just gonna email north korea to nuke australia tmrw 🥀

OMG hi i kept on finding homoerotic interpretations of A & B in critical readings too... id give them a yaoi fanfic of A & B in mod C

but anyways for Antonio, I did a more empathetic analysis on the corrosive impact of mercantile transactional relationships
in the dialogue "my purse, my person lie unlocked to your extremes t occasions" --> reduction of A to his monetary value to B + the sad fact that love and wealth is understood as inseparable in Venice

so a critic proposed that the unexplained melancholy in the first few lines "in soothe I know why not I am sad" is Shakespeare's cyclical structure to the final scenes where Antonio is sidelined from the romantic plot (Bassanio + Portia, Nerissa +Lorenzo) --> exemplifies failure to forge meaningful human connections within Venetian society that is governed by commerce and contracts (can link here to dramatic form of the Venetian settings)

I attached the critical!!!!

Hope that helps, please don't nuke aus I need to turn 18 first xxx

Antonio is such a stock character that Shakespeare even acknowledges that at the end of the "comedy" play where all the couples are together and all the loose ends are wrapped up, the exception is Antonio whose sadness at the start of the play is never really resolved or explored, and is left alone at the end of the play.

If anything I'd say The Merchant of Venice is about Shylock, Portia and to a lesser extent Bassanio. Antonio is merely an instigator for certain events to happen (the loan, him losing his ships at the start of the play, encouraging Bassanio to pursue Portia)

Saying he's in love with Bassanio is way too much of a leap, you could argue that lens if this was a Module B essay but for a module all about universal truths about the human experience there wouldn't be a place to discuss that. Most essays however do have an Antonio paragraph that focuses on his friendship with Bassanio and how it compares to the mercantile nature of Venice etc, because Antonio is literally willing to lay down his life so that Bassanio can pursue her. I'd use that angle to discuss something about the innate human quality of loyalty or the significance of individual human relationships
