Hi everyone,

Lately, I have been soooooo stressed out :chainsaw:

You see, I've got this MASSIVE problem that is drilling my brain!

:sigh:

I have been thinking of dropping Ext 2 maths and I don't know which way I should go.

I just cannot stand the fact that I can perform sooooo well in 2 Unit maths with minimal (and I mean almost zero) effort while I have to work so hard in Ext 2 maths!

I have no doubt that I can be sucessful if I work hard on my Ext 2 maths but I just cannot apply myself coz my teacher's soooo crap! (to tell you the truth, I learn my entire course from my maths tutor and having learnt each topic within a couple of hours is pretty demanding)

Here's my results for my half yearly

2 Unit: 97% (rank unknown)
4 Unit: 66% (5 out of 12)

I am striving to achieve an UAI of 95+

I do okay in other subjects (at least that's what I think anyway)

Any advice?? please help me thanks

Well, here's the thing ... People often do very well in lower levels of Mathematics because lower level Maths becomes significantly easier once you've done hard/higher levels ... So it's a risk! (I know, I know, I didn't answer your question.)

Yes! My friend got high 90s for Ext2 and mid 90s for Ext1 last year. :)

What's your maths extension 1 mark & rank?
my 3 unit mark was moderate. it fluctuated a lot because in the beginning of the year, I had had the crap teacher
My mark did improve since I have changed class

for half yearly, I got 86

(rank 10 out of 100 something, assessment rank same)

Not to boast or anything but I had been pretty good in maths until my senior years when I have got a crappy maths teacher

it is a risk either way.
I've constantly asked myself:

what if I could have a better UAI if I dropped 4 U maths, and vice versa. it's just soooooo annoying!

I would have stuck with it if I had got a better teacher. :(

not in my school anyway. my teacher set easy tests!

You know what he told me when i asked him a question in the morning JUST before the 4 U test?

Well, I asked him how is he supposed to test 5 topics in a 70minute test.

he said that it would be very easy and he expected everyone to get like 99%

In the end? LOL, the top mark was 91 then 80 then 74! I just wanna laughed myself off at his remarks!

the problem with me is, I am just so lost, I know that I should study consistently with 4 U maths but I didn't. I guess I just can't get motivated. I always learnt the topic two days before the test. My tutor told me that 66% wasn't bad considering my study approach! I know that I would have to work a lot harder should I continue with 4 U maths.

how come your school makes you do 2,3,4 unit maths together?

just in case I wanna drop 4 Unit maths, I can still go back to 3 unit.

It's a safety precaution

I would recommend keeping Extension 2... you're doing pretty well.

Worst case scenario: you keep it and up getting something equivalent to what you would have received had you dropped back to 2u.

In terms of scaling, you need to guarantee that you'll get high 90s in 2u in order to come close to equalling what you would have achieved in 4u. And, of course, if you drop down to 2u, your 3u component drops a whole unit in value...

basically yes :( well we have extra lessons outside class for extension classes

so... I have to go to school at 7:40 each morning (since I do english and maths extension) an extra hour each morning and also stay back 1 hour on wednesday for ext 2 maths

that means that on wednesdays, i go to school from 7:40 to 4:40!

I guess that's the worst scenario. another problem is that I sometimes have student council meeting on wednesday afternoons. My ext 2 teacher wouldn't change time for me (it shouldn't be on wednesday in the first place, but that was a long story!)

anyway, i am so scared of the upcoming test, I had been sick and missed two lessons, and one more because of the meeting. that's sooooo hard to catch up! (but whether sitting in class or not, that wouldn't make a huge difference since I don't know what he's talking about!)

argh!!!!! that's what tutors are for!! I hope I can continue just for the sake of UAI and for the sake my parents have spent so much money on me for tutoring :(

My average so far is 60.
rank is about 3rd or 4th .. out of 5 :/
to keep or not to keep?

i know it scales you up a lot, but if rank really counts that much then do you think I should keep it?
I dunno.
The worst thing that could happen I suppose would be that they just don't count it,.... yeah? :)

We are on the same boat! If rank is not a factor, it's most likely that I would keep up with it. Even though my half yearly assessment rank is 5/12, my overall assessment is 9/12, which this is a huge worry!

don't drop extension 2 maths, it keeps your UAI above the water. Think of it as a floatie (the water being 90)

Thank you all, you guys are so inspiring! I guess I'll stick with it for another time (to tell you the truth, this is my third attempt at thinking of dropping it!!)

if i were you i'd keep it.

but bloody hell, drop it if ur just going to keep it and then spend all this time thinking about dropping it and blah blah blah blah blah. it's just gonna waste too much time... we're near the end of term 2 for christs sake. if u want to continue, then u should put the most amount of effort possible instead of whinging about ur teacher and the meetings. stop thinking about whats pulling u back and just do it.

ask ur teacher to go through what u did in the lesson with you. and if ur sick u could still spend half the day doing something right?

at least make a decision now yea? it's what's best.

u think 7:40-4:40 is bad? when i have late band and extension in the morning i can be there from 7:30-9pm... and that's with only like a 1.5 hour break for dinner!

i think u should keep 4U, i mean we've almost finished term two, so that only leaves 1 term to go - you've made it so far... i would stick with it
