Hi guys,

Long time lurker here and finally have a question.
I'm a 4th year into my Commerce & Law degree at UNSW and wanted to transfer into the Commerce & Engineering program at Usyd.

The question is and my biggest worry is how many credits would I be able to transfer?
I don't really want to extend my degree by that many years.

I've basically completed all my commerce subjects at UNSW and done 2 engineering courses at UNSW

Thanks in advanced!

So you've basically done one semesters' worth of work so you will have 4.5 more years to go by transferring.

imo finish law and then do postgrad engineering

Oh I misread, I thought you meant you did 2 engo subjects and 2 commerce subjects

If you've "finished" your commerce degree you will need to complete 168UoC for the engineering degree (Idk about USYD)

May I ask what you're majoring in for Commerce? USyd Business School has a policy that you have to complete at least half of your major at USyd. But if you major in Economics or Econometrics, you can work your way around it (it's a tiny loophole) since these are now part of the Arts and Social Sciences faculty so there's no restriction on how much of your major you need to fulfil at USyd. In this case, you could probably transfer into B Com/Eng at USyd.

However, if you don't major in either of these then you have to sacrifice a few more years ... Or going by what you said in your post that you've pretty much finished your BCom degree then just graduate with that at UNSW and apply for B Eng at USyd through UAC as a mature age student. You can still apply for credit for your Engineering units.

Because there's a GO8 agreement, I'm pretty sure most of your Commerce subjects will be creditable but you still need to catch up on some units here and there. I'm not too sure on Engineering though sorry!

Also why don't you do an internal transfer to B Com/Eng at UNSW instead (apologies for my ignorance on which is the better uni for Engineering) - I think this is your best bet. You save time and the HECS debt. My 2 cents.

Thanks Squar3root,
I've basically done 96 units of commerce at UNSW and 12 units of engineering. From what I am aware (but maybe very wrong), Comm/Eng at USYD also has 96(?) units for commerce and the remaining 144units (=240-96) for Engineering.
The question is if I can transfer all of it lol, or as much as I can so I don't have to extend my studies by that much.

Hi Raisondetre1, Thanks for your reply as well!
I am majoring in Finance at UNSW. I've heard something about that policy along the lines of having to do at least "half the degree" at USYD, but didn't know it only applied to specific commerce Majors. I also heard that Commerce/Engineering degree is managed by the faculty of Engineering, so would that be any different?

That's an interesting point about just graduating at UNSW first with the Bcom degree. I haven't done my research, but would doing the degree combined have reduced number of credits? (e.g. Com and engo alone is 3 and 4 years respectively, but together is only 5 years)

And for the internal transfer point, its because the engineering stream is only offered at USYD :(

As I have mentioned to the reply to Squar3root, I think the big question is how many of my 96 units in UNSW Comm and 12 units of UNSW engo would be approved.
Maybe I can talk with an adviser at USYD?

Thanks again!

No problem - glad I could help! I'm a late USyd transfer as well. Long story. :)

Yeah you might have to do an extra major or something if you're graduating straight B Com at UNSW but it depends if you've done a lot of electives (good point by the way). Double degrees aren't exactly my forte .. I currently do a one-and-a-half-degree (not a single but also not a double degree) haha. Sorry! An adviser would probably be good but I have a feeling they'll say something along the lines of "get your offer to study at USyd, then we'll talk".

I think when you're inquiring about Commerce-related things, the Business School manages it and Engineering pretty much can't touch it. This is purely going by my experience so I could be wrong.

As I said, the GO8 agreement means a lot of your units will go through (not sure how much but definitely a lot) but since you major in Finance, USyd will force you to do an extra 3 subjects or so to fulfil their policy. That's what I got for majoring in Finance just FYI ... I had pretty much finished that major back at my other uni.

I know credit transfers are a bit of a grey area especially when you're looking at 2nd and 3rd year subjects but if it helps, it might be worth checking out the credit check tool that the USyd Arts faculty has got (http://sydney.edu.au/arts/current_students/credit_tool.shtml) - keep in mind though that when you do the actual transfer, it may be slightly different.

Hope this helps!
