Transport mechanisms in plants? (1 Viewer)

Can anyone explain this to me? I don't really understand the structure of the xylem and i definately don't understand the phloem at all! basicly all i know is that the xylem transports water and minerals up and the phloem transports sugar and stuff up and down. Thats it...help!

xylem dead therefore must be passive transport...few bits to this

transpiration (evapouration at leaves) pulls water up
cohesion-polar water "sticks" together
adhesion-water sticks to xylem and dont fall

companion cells help create a area of high concentration of nutrients (actively moves nutrients somewhere) this causes water to go there where conc. of H20 is lower..(passive transport for this bit only) then this flow of water allows more nutrients in the pholem to flow...its weird and noone really understands it apparently properly but thats about the size of it
