The two's complement system is commonly used to represent integers within computers where as the sign modulus is rarely used. Explain why this is the case?

I have no idea about this, and i cant deduce any information for samD's book.

Two's complement can represent negative numbers without the need for a sign bit.

That should be a pretty good starting point :)

Read the bottom of page 338 and top of page 339 - should give you a starting point for an answer.
