i had this machine with XP installed and then i plugged my optus cable modem in there and installed driver and shit, i was able to surf the net

but then i restarted and this msg came up

window could not start because the following file is muissing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
you can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original set up CD rom
select 'r' at the first screen to start repair

Try the following things:

- select R and let it repair
- reboot again and let it try fix itself
- try the computer without the modem

The setup CD is probably talking about the Windows CD, if you have one.

First try rebooting in safe mode and see if it will boot. Try safe mode with and without networking to see if the networking subsystem is causing the problem.

If it worked without networking but didn't work with networking go to the Device Manager and delete the network card from the list. Then reboot and let Windows reinstall the network card. Since the cable modem is connected to your computer's network card, any changes that might have been made might be undone by the reinstallation.

I don't know about a virus, it doesn't sound like one from what you've said so far.

Have you tried booting in safe mode?

When Windows XP boots up, just before the black and white progress bar, you should see a message down the bottom of the screen about pressing F8 for start up options. Press F8, and you'll get a menu to select some booting options. Select booting in safe mode.

Can you try and give a more detailed description of the error and exactly when (after what) it happens?

You said before that you couldn't boot with your Windows CD. Is CD booting enabled in your BIOS?

that comp is running on XP co-operate version for like half a yr and i wanted to surf the net with it tonight

i installed my modem driver, and was able to surf the net...then half way surfing the net, i saw the modem was responding as well, so i reboot..

when i rebooted, this msg popped up..

and yes, i went into bios/cmos whatever one and made sure its booting from CD

and then when i reboot, a msg like boot from CD, press any kid to boot from CD, and i did, and the comp just sits there afterwards, if i leave and dun press any keys, it will load that error msg again

Its very strange that it can't even boot from CD or start in safe mode. I'll assume you've tried everything to make it boot with the CD or safe mode.

If neither of these work, and you're up for it, see if the computer will boot with the CD with the hard disk removed from your computer.

If it won't even boot the CD, you can't exactly format it even if you wanted to.

It was strange as hell sunny, he couldn't boot from CD, it froze, safe mode didn't work, nor did last known good configuration, there was by all means no way to get accessed, so i thought the best method was to replace the actual system file, and yeah now it works, his problem is solved.
