Hey, have you peeps seen this:

"Applicants enrolled in the Bachelor of Medical Science at UNSW

This graduate entry stream is only available to UNSW students commencing the BMedSc from 2007 onwards. From 2011 onwards, up to 15 places will be available for students to enter year 4 of the Medicine program with advanced standing. This entry scheme is not available to international students.

Selection will be on the basis of the weighted average mark for the first two years of BMedSc, the UMAT score and interview results. These three selection criteria will be weighted equally. Please note:

  • Students must have completed all 8 core courses for Stage 2 of the BMedSc and all other required courses. The BMedSc weighted average mark will be calculated on the basis of core courses and Science electives only. It will not include results of any studies undertaken outside the BMedSc at UNSW or elsewhere. HSC (or equivalent) results will not be taken into consideration.
  • For the graduate entry stream only, the UMAT result used will be the highest total score from any UMAT test undertaken in the 3 years preceding selection i.e. 2006, 2007 or 2008 for applicants applying for selection in 2008 and enrolling in the Medicine program in 2011.
  • The interview results used will be from the interview held during or immediately following the second year of BMedSci at UNSW.
During Year 2 of the BMedSc, the process for application will be as for all other non-HSC applicants. That is, students will be required to:
  • Submit a “Registration of Interest” via the Faculty of Medicine website (www.med.unsw.edu.au)
  • Submit a “Medicine Application Form” (download form from Faculty of Medicine website)
  • Sit the UMAT examination (if applicant does not have scores from an attempt in the previous 2 years)
  • Apply to UNSW Medicine through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC – www.uac.edu.au)
Applicants will be selected for interview in the September of year 2 of their degree, on the basis of BMedSc results to date (weighted average mark) and UMAT score. Additional applicants may also be selected for interview early in the following January. Note that the interview will differ from that undertaken by applicants in the other categories of entry.

This entry pathway leads to the offer of a provisional place and is subject to completion of all the other requirements for the BMedSc with Honours plus additional coursework as prescribed."

you can read it here: http://www.med.unsw.edu.au/medweb.nsf/page/Selection_local

So, what do you guys think about it?

Would it be worthwhile taking medsci just to get into medicine?

How hard would it be to transfer from this (medsci), compared to transferring from a 'normal' course (eg. psych, biotech, etc)?

and btw, what is advanced standing?

Advanced standing is also referred to as Credit Transfer, "Advanced Standing at Undergraduate level is recognition of prior study at a University or TAFE. At Postgraduate level it is recognition of prior postgraduate study in a university." from my.unsw.edu.au

Well, if you think about it, 15 people from Med Sc will guarantee make it to medicine if they want it to. So the chance is relatively high compare with other methods of admission.

As to "Would it be worthwhile taking medsci just to get into medicine? ", the answer is probably no, because you probably wouldn't want to get stuck in med sc in case you didn't get into medicine, provided med science is not your immediate preference after medicine.

oh. so that's what advanced standing is.

and, yeah. i was thinking of maybe trying for medsci, then trying to get into med through that... but, yeah, if i didn't make it, then i would be pretty screwed, eh? coz i'd much rather do psych, i guess, and try for that tiny, tiny, tiny place into med. and if i didn't make it, then just continue with my course...
ah, the world can be so cruel...

I don't think it would be worth doing it JUST to get into med (I don't think any degree is worth doing just for that, if you can do something else that you enjoy). The good thing about this degree is that you have 3 main ways of getting into med by doing it:
1) The advanced standard method
2) Applying to undergrad degrees as a non-standard while you're taking the degree (almost all undergrad degrees allow non-year 12s to apply for their med degree).
3) Once you finish, using the GAMSAT for grad entry med schools.

Bad thing if:
1) You hate working in labs
2) You hate the idea of a med sci degree
3) You're not uber competitive (can you imagine how much competition would go into this degree??? It'd be easier to do another degree, get a high GPA, and apply to another undergrad or grad entry med course)

hehe. yeah, i probly wouldn't stand a chance getting into med thru medsci, coz i'm not all that competive.... and i don't think i would go to all that trouble just to get into med. and i guess i'm not much of a lab person either...
