Hi guys, our english essay is due friday, and it is on Emma by jane austen, we had to view a scene from the movie "Clueless" by amy heckerling, and answer this question : "How does the sequence from Clueless transform the values and attitudes represented in Emma?" and the scene we watched was here :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xM2mL0y9i5M and a LITTLE bit before that, starting from the bit where Cher narrates her perception of modern guys and how they're like dogs. This is what i've written so far, tell me how im going plz????

The two texts Clueless and Emma are rich and diverse in their storylines with both worlds revolving around a specific set of values and attitudes ascribed to that society, from Emma’s 19th Century Regency England to Clueless’ 20th century Beverly Hills. Although the texts were composed at different times, the underlying ideals, attitudes and values share many similarities, as well as differences, which one can easily explore for comparison and contrast of the new and old structure of society, as well as inter-textual relationships between storylines. Individual character values and attitudes can also be seen as a reflection of the hierarchial structure constructed by both societies, a prime characteristic which distinguishes one society from the other, or as one might interpret the evolution of one society into the other.
In the scene of Clueless, just before Christian is first introduced to the storyline, the sequence begins with a slow motion depiction of teenage boys strutting down a pathway at school, with narration provided by Emma. This is followed by the camera returning to a mid-shot view of Cher, in class, staring up thoughtfully past the camera view as the teacher talks. This part of the sequence is suggestive of Emma not paying attention in class, the slow-motion scene of boys suggestive of dreaming, and having her thoughts primarily revolving around sex-related topics, being her descriptions of modern guys being successively shown visually as she describes them. These two values Cher displays are typical and reflective of the contemporary teenage world, being the dismissive nature teenagers appropriate to society, as well as the selfishness, egotism, hedonism and ignorance teenagers so often display as their own attitudes towards life and society. Two important characteristics the scene exemplifies through Cher’s behaviour are her innocence and femininity.

In contrast to Clueless, there is a lack of this small sequence of the protagonist female in Emma. This is due to the many values and attitudes developed in contemporary society being, in fact, absent from the old society of Regency England. In Regency England, etiquette, sophistication, and obsequiousness are necessary to conform to the social standards and ideals drilled into the timeframe. Actions such as the dismissal and ignorance of figures of authority would never be allowed as they would attribute an unfavourable label upon the individual who acts this way. A demotion of social standing would most likely occur. The new cerebral freedom and self-portrayal teens give themselves is thus a transformation of their primitive versions as values and attitudes in old society.
Following the “dreaming” scene of Cher, the character of Christian walks into the classroom, and the camera shifts to him, with elegant piano music playing as he slowly swings his jacket over his shoulder and poses in a sexually suggestive way. This characterises him as being a highly sophisticated, well dressed individual with an air of elegance, and immediately sets his character as socially supreme in the teen hierarchy, in Cher’s mind. The absence of Cher’s narration as well as shots of her lustful gaze suggest enamoration. Christian is then acknowledged, and he replies “Where should I park?” being a blatant example of the evolved teenage vernacular, and since he fails to address the teacher with a respectful and polite response it further reiterates the attitudes and values of dismissal of authority, egotism, selfishness and ignorance present in the teen view of society, transformed from the aloof and particular etiquette-focused views that men and women held in Regency England.
The same part in Emma where Emma observes Frank for the first time, there is a similar sequence of events at her house, in that Emma describes to herself her own interpretation of the man she sees. The lack of outward communication on Emma’s part and the internal narration of her analysis of Frank purport a silent admiration of him, similar to Cher’s silent admiration of Christian. Frank’s speech, however, is much more appropriate and sophisticated than Christian’s, which further adds to his characterisation as a gentleman of sophistication and well-bred values and attitudes, which are recognised as the most desirable by Emma.

Following the seating of Christian, Emma gives a short narration about her desire to also find a guy for herself, when she quickly elbows her fluffy pencil off her desk; wherein Christina bends down to pick it up. The camera alternates between a shot angled down at Christian, and a shot angled up at Cher, almost suggesting a paradigm shift in society, from a mainly patriarchal to now a matriarchal society, as the upwards camera towards Cher suggest an independence and free will of women which was lacking in Regency England. Accompanying is a very light and smooth romantic music, to promote the sexual tension and feeling in the interaction between Cher and Christian. The ignorance of authority is further portrayed here as Cher continues to stare at Christian and vice versa. Their gaze is abruptly halted as the teacher reminds Cher of her due speech, so she gets up to perform it. The perfect mid-shot of Cher combined with her feminine behaviour and speech, as well as the topic of the speech, “Violence in the Media”, further reiterate the concept of a paradigm shift giving rise to power for women, and their importance in society being increased. Also Cher’s values of independence and cerebral dominance contrast to the inhibition of female values in Emma.
In the matching part of Emma, there is a lack of initiation of conversation on Emma’s part. Rather, there is silent reservation and idealization of Frank, a conceptual reaffirmation to the patriarchal society of the time. Women are developed by society to be at a slightly lower social level than men.
After her speech, Cher sits down to a cheerful applause, antecedent to characterisation of a few new individuals. The teacher asks for comments to three students. Elton responds in a completely ignorant manner, speaking on an irrelevant topic, in a hostile manner. This behaviour follows the values and attitudes very commonly presented in Clueless, the egotism, arrogance and ignorance of the teenage world. Following Elton is Travis, with

I realize now that this kind of question is impossible to answer unless both texts are at hand, and even then it involves a bit of work and analysis on your parts. I sincerely apologise! I will be ever so grateful if you guys are able to help me :D though do not be hassled if you lack the time or cannot please.
