Sorry but nope.

Whilst some kind-hearted, old teachers might mark it. Chances are your test will be ripped up.

You have to show all working in blue/black pen. Diagrams and graphs can be drawn in pencil though. The thing about pencil is that it can be easily edited without leaving much of a trace. Even though you don't get your papers back, it's a risk BOS wouldn't want to take.

if you did it in an internal exam and a teacher blasts you and gives you zero, you can compromise and say how you wont do it again, but in the HSC they arent that leniant :)

they give you enough paper to right on. So if you do a mistake you can just cross it out, if you run out just get more :) i dont know about other schools but we get separate booklets for maths and english or any essay based subject excluding maths

PLUS! using a penicil allows for rubbing out right? i have always been lectured time and time again, now to obliberate my work, coz im a scribbler. If you work in pencil, then decide your answers wrong and rub it out, then the markers can't give you any marks for your shoddy working out... even if it would mean just one or two marks more

shellybelly had a point there. For maths, markers are permitted to give you partial marks for crossed-out working. If you have the correct answer but you've crossed it out you might get 2/3 marks, but if you did it in pencil and rubbed it out, who will ever know?

pens don't fade.
Quite the opposite. Since pens are ink based, over time (it may take anywhere from years to decades) pens will fade, perhaps not completely, but they will noticably fade. Pencil on the other hand will not fade, and things you write in pencil will remain the same 50 years later as the day you wrote it.

That's for maths.
For Chemistry (and I'm guessing other sciences), markers are instructed to ignore anything that is crossed out. Otherwise you could just write down two answers, cross one out and guarantee yourself 1/2 marks which is unfair.
