That's shit IMO because I have two friends right now doing Nursing at USYD. It says it won't affect the students who are currently enrolled but I have my doubts. :(

The other problem is that most girls in Nursing are really hawwwttt...no more eye candy for the USYD'ers. :p

Yes, nursing probably only comes second to visual arts when it comes to hot chicks... I spent a good part of each semester going to lectures from the carpark via visual arts... just makes the day that little bit brighter. :D

and UWS is known for its nursing although I would have thought that USYD would have kept nursing, considering that theres a shortage so any graduates would be better than no nursing graduates.

That IS a serious concern, but as Raiks said, there's always the VA chicks

I don't see whats wrong with passing reform to make universities more efficient. If universities manage to somehow rake in more money, it can only be good for future students because it should create more HECs places and improve facilities etc

It doesn't create more HECS places... if the unis are making more money, the government will use this as an excuse to give them less...

From the way UWS is splitting up its campuses course wise (see the UWS thread), and now with USYD getting rid of nursing, it seems that the whole argument over which uni is better will become obsolete because every uni will be specialising in a different course.

I don't think the case is "which uni has great nursing", they're all great. The bottom line is, this will have really detrimental affects on the number of qualified nurses being supplied every year. Just looking at the statistics in that article it amazes me how a uni that trains the 3rd largest number of nurses will scrap their course.

I also saw something about them scrapping the Orange Rural Management thing.... does that mean that they will be closing the orange campus?

Did i hear right on the radio this morning that it wont affect people next year either? It had better not cause USYD was the only one that offered combined nursing and arts...

i'm a nursing student and i'm going to do something about it. if they go through with this i'm going to sack the facility on my last year because then they would no longer require the equipment.

grr, that really pisses me off.

the only reason they are scrapping it because they are not allowed to increase the fees for it. what the f*$%*, they have survived with the normal fees for the past umpteen years..and the revenue USYD will be bringing in from the other fee increases should be plenty enough to counteract any nursing degree problems.

the shortage of nurses is ridiculous enough as it is. so few people are being nurses at the moment, and for one of sydney's 'top' uni's to be scrapping nursing as a viable professional would discourage even more people to become nurses.

lengstar, it says that future undergrads will be moved to UTS or ACU. does that mean you are affected?

I totally agree, and I also believe that one of the reasons they are scrapping it is because they can't raise the HECS so it will be unprofitable.

And I think it's crap that the people already enrolled won't be affected... as they scale down the program to close it, the current undergrads will be affected I am sure.

It seems as if the nursing staff at USyd had no idea about this either, as at the careers market today they still had someone from nursing and I overhead them saying they only just found out too.

I had a look and the only university that offers anything close to what i want to do at sydney is in freakin Melbourne. I want to do nursing but if i have to travel to melbourne to do a course which isnt what i want, i dont know what im going to do.

If it passes dont sack the nursing staff... sack the bloody DET... they know nothing about real life... i reckon their man purpose is to royally screw me over. First my hsc time table and now my uni course.

I hope you DET people read this... im not attacking you personally, just the stupid decisions made...
