Ok... i just want to know if UTS really is just one or two buildings.. or if in some hidden place there really IS a UTS campus? Because that is the main turn-off for me. I think i'm still going to go to UTS next year anyway, but i just want to know what there is in terms of a campus. And also is it still possible to maintain some sort of social life at UTS? because i've heard some weird things.. :(
Apart from that... my first preference is B Business/B Law there, which i should get into unless the UAI cut off rises drastically. :)

Oh now that ive read the rest of your post, a social life is just as likely as at USYD it just depends whether youre willing and open to making new friends and partying.

Exactly, like will you actually go (if you went to Sydney) "Oh I love this green green grass in this campus?" You would probably admire it at O week then, after that go "assignment due assignment due" or "damn this walking" ;). whereas UTS is "Oh, yummy food? Right away!"

This is part of my argument to convince my friends that UTS is cool. ;)

well generally.. if you want a social life at uts, you'll have to find it. The uni hardly runs anything proper or any.

if you really want a social life like "uni uni" social life, then you'll probably prefer uni. syd.

Sebastian, that's just not true. As a union volunteer I can tell you that the UTS Union spends proportionately the same amount of time, money and effort on student events as USyd (a little less than UNSW) but the problem is really student apathy. The students at UTS don't seem to actively seek to meet total randoms at uni events, and unlike the other big unis UTS has huge competition from the CBD hangs.

You can still have a good social life at UTS (or USyd etc) if you're willing to organise stuff with your friends. If you don't have any friends, look out for the union events etc. Also, the clubs run a LOT of events - find something you're interested in and your free time will fill up quickly.

I was just looking at the Computing Society homepage and they have pretty cool events like Xbox party nights @ Microsoft Aus. headquarters. This is a club I'm gonna wanna join.

Haha Compsoc...

I'm a member of that. To be honest it's only worth the $10 if you go to the XBox night in either semester, but the places are very limited so you need to register as soon as the page opens (you'll get an email alert). They don't actually do anything "computer" related, except the installfest (which is just the club pimping Microsoft junk) and the XBox nights (more of the same, but with free beer and Halo LAN).

I much preferred the Electronic Gamers' Guild - EGG. Membership is the same, but they hold a LOT more events (consoles on the concourse every friday of semester, as well as LANs every break and other events) and your membership is a full calendar year, regardless of when you actually pay your fees. They're one of the four clubs invited to advisory day on the 5th, so go talk to one of the execs - you'll see them playing Soul Calibur 2 or something. :)

Tell them Lex sent you. :p

Hmm.. CompSoc and EGG. Well if there's weekly gaming + Soul Calibur 2, EGG it is.

So what are some other reasons why UTS students don't seem to socialise to the extent of other uni students? If anything, I thought the CBD environment would make them even more sociable since there are so many places to hang out before/during/after uni.

And also does UTS have "clubs" (dont know exactly what they're called) that uni's like UNSW have? e.g. i know someone in the Young Liberals at UNSW, and im not saying that i want to join the young liberals, but is there a young liberals thing at UTS? Or are there organisations that span all the different universities?

well yeah.. that's true, but you gotta take into account how much "excitement" these events could actually be.. i mean the whatever book has an advert "OMGWTF BBQ" i mean.. seriously... how many bbq's can a person have?

ROFL! Robert, now now, just coz you don't have friends and take the unions side :p

yeah ... there's a fair few around our place... there's "young labor party" and "the sex me hard" :p nah j/k about that one..

@Robert, you wasted your $10 on compsoc like me :p someone false advertised on Bos!

@Shin, go for EGG. If you're the computer gaming type, its a great club although i havent' been able to attend jack all events this year coz i wasn't 18 to join in the paintball. Well i was looking to that :p other events like LAN are pretty cool. go to www.egg.org/forum to sign up and ask around more.

to answer your second question about socialising, its not that UTS students don't like socialising with other uni students, but alot tend to be reluctant to venture out from their "group" if i can put it that way. They sorta like to stay where they are comfortable meet as opposed to knowing new randoms.

yeah when i was typing that.. i knew it didn't make sense :p

but i posted anyway ... :p

what i meant that some of the events that the union hold aren't um.. say "eye popping". The union advertises in the mag, can't remember what its called.. and you also get clubs avertising stuff.

EGG as fore mentioned example brings out ads like "OMGWTF BBQ!"

but what im trying to point out is, that although clubs try and promote socialising at UTS, people don't really wanna "join in" if you get what im saying...

uts isn't just 1 or two buildings..
its spread out..

since your first prefrence seems to be b bus/b law
it is most likely you'll be at the haymarket campus in china town.. not at the main campus @ broadway.
there is a social atmposhere at uts..(but not the the vast extent places like unsw promotes)
as it goes... those who seek shall find what they look for..
its not that bad :)
for example engineering society organises international beer tasting nights, harbour cruises, prawn and beer night, paint ball etc..oh and alot of bbqs

on the otherhand societies such as AYBC (australia-asia youth business council) - organises things that will assist you towards your chosen career path ( guest speakers from organisations.. etc) -- its like......... a stepping stone in networking out...
