Hey that's not a bad idea actually. I wonder how the Newcastle interview people would look at that specialty aspiration. :p

Research isn't always interesting. In fact most of the time it's nasty tedious, and researchers spend their lives waiting for that one brilliant flash when they discover something interesting...many die without ever experiencing it.

actually i don't know anymore. Depends on the position you take at a uni. I saw physics job openings (for a lecturing position) and they were offering 70-90k per annum. This is opposed to a HS teacher who will earn up to $60k a year (i think it was after 15 years of teaching? my info is old, teacher told me this 5 years ago) and a principal earns 80-90kish?. Also an academic must hand in research papers and stuff. Whereas a school teacher could just bum off in the holidays.
But then again I saw a senior research position in some biomed faculty offering 200k+.

Consider how many run of the mill academics there are compared to run of the mill teachers. A principal is comparable to an associate professor - not an easy title to come by. The pay for an AProf is WAY higher too, and you get more research options. Far more personally fulfilling than handling the administrative matters of a school whilst wrangling with outdated superiors in the DEST.

i know i professor at UNSW who turned down a 100K+ job to keep his position as a comp science teacher- its more rewarding i guess. the guy's family pressured him to take medicine coz his UAI was i think 99.95.... he says hes got no regrets coz, like i said he's doin somethin he loves :) i mean isnt that what a good working life should be all about?

altho for 100K i would do med teaching only cos it keeps changing and is so new
