I'm currently doing an assignment about sacred places in Hinduism. I'm just wondering if there are any "variants within the traditon of Hinduism" (in this case, sacred places)
If so, can someone please tell me what they are?
Are Sikhism and Jainism the variants of Hinduism?
I'm confused..

try here
http://religioustolerance.org/hinduism.htm
or here
http://www.hindunet.org/

There are heaps of variants as they are based upon diety worship and as you hopefully know, there are many to chose from!! About 80% worship Vishnu (known as Vaishnavites)

Might want to clarify your question a little. Are you talking about variants or sacred places as they are two different things (what you have asked is a little confusing)
And yes, I believe sikhism and jainism were variants (more offshoots) of Hinduism but are now recognised as religions in their own right.
Hope this helps

One of the requirements on my assignment sheet says:
* Identification of variants within the tradition - in relation to the topic area/component

The tradition I'm doing is Hinduism and the charactistic I'm doing is Sacred places. In other words, Sacred places of Hinduism. That's why I have to the variants of Hinduism in order to compare and talk about the topic.

*Thanks a lot snapperhead, you are a great help~

Thats what I thought but you never know with some of the questions being asked here!!!!

You should get heaps of info on the various varianst and their places of worship as there are so many (dont forget house temples as an example). For eg: the temple at Westmead (? not sure of the exact suburb) is sacred to about four or five different (main) gods but heaps of "lesser" gods (hate to catergorise but you know what I mean)

Might want to look at the temple at Helensburg as well.......

Glad I could help.......
