Our teacher said to us today that they are writing our yearly reports tomorrow and that we do not have time to do our major project. It is just not fair!

Hmm.. Why would your teacher told that to you after the trials?
I did my major project in term 1-2, allowed us 10 weeks to do from February.

As far as I know its compulsry to do some form of major project, to be honest I reckon it didn't help me understand the course much more, we should of learnt evolution first.

the syllabus doesnt state that we have to do a major project to my knowledge, however many sdd teachers find that to fulfill the practical requirements of the sdd syllabus, a major project is the best way to go. It also helps to understand the software course as you practically have to understand the processes involved in developing a software solution which in the end is basically the purpose of the sdd course.....

i say be an arsehole and take it up to the board of studies as you "believe" that the practical component isnt been complete
