"Western Civilization"disguises behind its showy faade a picture of hyenas and jackals." -Ernesto Che Guevara Representing Cuba 19th Session UN Assembly.
[re-edited let me know what you think, I realize many pieces on Neo-Colonialism have come before, hopefully this isn't the worst.]
Neo-Colonialism: As country by country citizens of each nation state through Asia, Africa and South and Central America were able through self-determination to shake off the yoke of Colonialism, a New World Order sprang into action to debilitate this self-determination through decisive military action and oppression. To expose some of the new agents of oppression listed are some of the new "subcontractors" in the global market as to unmask the faade and show some of what the Mayans refer to as the "devil's true face."
These are perilous times we live in; times in which many decisions are being made to effect the results of future generations. Lands seemingly untouched by time such as tribal lands in Southern Mexico are being timbered, paved and developed at alarming rates. Those who resist the "progress" of industrialization for new market growth are seen as decadent, ignorant, and in some ways terrorist. This is not to say that there are not those who out of anger have allowed their passions to take actions which disavow their friendship to the movement, but to say that such anger has only been made stronger through injustice and neglect and the deadening of hope in New Imperialism.
While those in the predominantly "White" world prepare for the latest party to open the social season and revel in their decadence, half the world goes hungry. The world Joseph Conrad observed in France in Heart of Darkness where jewels and resources supplying the wealthy of France are siphoned through a dark shipping business whose real actions in the Congo display the deepest levels of barbarism, still exists. Ernesto Guevara in his address of the 19th Session of the UN assembly uses the jackal comment above to note nothing had changed in the Congo, and that Belgian troops murdered thousands of Congolese in his mind "in the name of the white race," which was all the more ironic to Guevara as the Belgians themselves had in generation past been murdered by Hitler for having insufficiently Aryan blood.
The war in the Congo for resources continues in the form of ICI [International Charter Incorporated.] ICI is the latest company to the Congo, it trains for Unconventional Warfare operations and was "contracted" by the US Department of State to provide 24 hour "peacekeeping support" to the West African nation of Sierra Leone(talk about subcontracting!)
ICI, whose main conquest is West Africa through Liberia and Sierra Leone, states that its goal is peacekeeping. It's real goals are to create profit for globalism through local resources namely: diamonds and oil. Mission guidelines were to follow U.S. Embassy flight plans to use heli-borne surveillance of rebel groups, provide support to the World Bank and USAID and further US policy in the region, which according to the ICI website includes "continuing conflict in the region as 'possible training grounds for terrorist networks.'"[Cascadiamedia.org]
The result? In 2002 Ahmad Tejan Kabbah was reelected as President of Sierra Leone, he has ruled over half of the ten year civil war. A war many acknowledge as little more than all out corporate warfare between international mining companies for control of Sierra Leone's diamonds. (Perhaps creating demand for these goods has resulted in the mass media's new onslaught in the glorification of marriage and emphasize on diamond rings?) As is more widely known now, one group, Revolutionary United Front (RUF), was known for hacking off the limbs of its victims and was supported by the recently ousted Liberian President Charles Taylor. Taylor before his ousting was supported by both the US and it's subsidiary ICI who entered Liberia in 1996, to support primarily the extraction of diamonds at all costs.
Executive Vice President of ICI [International Charter Incorporated, also known as International Charter Incorporated of Oregon] complained in his speech to the U.S. Congress on September 17, 2001, "Congress and others wanted a 'nice human rights respecting' intelligence system." He argued that, "IF you want to get inside terrorist organizations then you need [to hire] a terrorist to do it." In 2002 Boquist ran for US Congress in Oregon's 5th District, but thank goodness I believe he lost, most likely the powers that be don't wish to bring the goons out of the closet just yet. Formally Boquist worked as the Director of International Marketing at Evergreen Aviation.
Evergreen Aviation, which also has a Northwestern U.S. base in Salem, Oregon, states its goals are to assist in humanitarian aid and to help fight the drug war in Latin America. It among others helps run covert operations for the CIA in a number of Latin American locations, and has assisted right-wing death squads. It's other agenda concerns assisting the work of Erickson Air-Crane, also known as Canadian Air-Crane Ltd. Using primarily the S-64 Air-Crane helicopter originally created by the Sikorsky corporation for Vietnam, it transports huge amounts of heavy equipment into wildernesses and jungle habitats for the purpose of creating quick natural gas drilling stations. Its main targets are Ecuador, Peru and Indonesia, where U.S. interests have subverted human rights and violations for oil policies. In 2003 Erickson sprayed "nano-tech" chemicals called "SoilSet" through a Heli-tanker onto tribal lands in New Mexico, without permission, which is no doubt a test of the use of chemical "nano-tech" weapons.
Evergreen has had similar assignments, contracted through AID [Agency for International Development] pilots found they were actually serving on cover for CIA missions. In one example, Evergreen pilots thought they were in Nigeria to spray pesticides, but were met by the CIA on arrival and asked to create a diversion while the CIA rescued a hostage held by a rebel group in Chad, they were told to "spray whatever looks like need spraying" before returning. [cascadiamedia.org] According to the Founder and CEO of Evergreen Aviation, Del Smith, "If there's a need, we'll be there. The country doesn't have to ask. We're pledged to serve God and Mankind."
What Smith considers being the missions of God and Mankind one would be afraid to ask! Evergreen is heavily involved in supplying equipment for fighting the drug war, but according to CNN in a report on alternate drug busts in Miami Airport in 1999 Evergreen Airline ramp workers were indicted on charges of cocaine smuggling in sting operations. According to Special DEA agent Vincent Mazzilli, "They remarked the people at American Airlines were stupid to get caught and they were much smarter. And, we all know that they weren't." Of course there were no follow-up reports on the arrest.
Dynacorp, which holds $2 billion in contracts, including transport for the invasion of Iraq, and trains the new Iraqi police force and bodyguards for the new government in Afghanistan manages a 30 thousand terminal network for the FBI, and US/Mexican border. Currently it's being sued by 10,000 indigenous Ecuadorians who say its drug-war herbicides destroyed their farms and killed four children. Dynacorp employees have been exposed for running illegal weapons and sex-slave rings in both Bosnia and Kosovo while working as UN peacekeepers. It worked in concert with another professional team Military Professional Resources Inc. [MPRI] which was founded in 1988 by a group of high ranking retired military officers. MPRI trains and equips militaries worldwide with offices in Bosnia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Nigeria, among others through contracts with the US State Department and Department of Defense.
In Nigeria it works with the Nigerian military who regularly kill pro-democracy activists, Colombian military working to secure resources for corporations from guerrilla forces by working with death squads, drug dealers, is now working with the Green Berets and other US forces in Columbia threatening the borders of Venezula.
Kellogg, Brown and Root [KBR] is the bastard son of Halliburton, yes companies sire young too-- according to WTO they should have all the rights of citizen so why not. Dick Cheney was CEO of Halliburton until his . . .appointment to US Vice President in 2000. KBR has deployed in 50 nations with 25,000 workers providing logistical support for oil development, weaponry, and physical security for governments in conflict: Chechnya, Rwanda, Afghanistan, and Iraq. It also constructed the US's X-Ray detention center in Guantanamo Bay. KBR made $2.3 billion in sales last summer (way to pull out of the summer slump) by enforcing a "no-bid contract" [how's that for free markets all you macroeconomics free market fans!] to rebuild Iraq's oil industry it won $900 million alone$$.
ArmorGroup (I suppose ArmourGroup if you're in England [sic], or Armor Holdings, Inc) is in 38 countries working for oil, gas and mineral extraction companies and the U.S. State Department and World Bank. Amazingly enough, all these groups seem to have the same interests, how convenient. They provide "Intellectual Property Protection" so I'm probably in trouble for even mentioning it, and Information and Intelligence Services, on five continents. They are most proud of their "strategic security for oilfields."
These are just a few of the friends of Lockheed Martin and School of the Americas, and point to the new phase of "subcontracting" by major corporations. What is alarmingly clear is the pattern of attacks on tribal and native peoples for control of their resources, linking the environmental movement to the Anti-Imperialist movement in the use of herbicides and deforestation for mineral and oil interests. Also notable, is the how the company trains it's own forces in its host countries and then deploys them, and the use of cover tools. The hypocritical nature of these new objectives has resulted in persons and even companies engaging in black market activities to further sustain their goals of suppression of local and native peoples. (Basically, "While we're here, why don't we or someone else will" politics.)
As a socialist I see my goals becoming increasingly environmental, and have departed from some of the initial ideas of Marx's "Capital" in its application of progressive aims to fall more in the lines of Emilo Zapata's communal lands, what use is productivity of people or environments suffer? Although Marx recognized the collective in communal land activities he still focused on productivity. Is it possible to have a socialist agenda that does not heighten productivity as crucial? The human praxis must include the environmental praxis, and not merely for the cultivation of soils, but nature for nature's sake, not merely as the ox of man.
This would mean resistance to modern science's dominant paradigm of what Francis Bacon's viewed as the subjubation of the feminine Nature to Man's will. Ludwig Feurerbach's materialism relates more to this "physical harmony." For him Nature, with its own spirit, and the object are "Given from all eternity," in a mysterious harmony with man--a harmony which the philosopher alone perceives."[Henri Lefebvre, "Le Materialisme dialectique (Paris, 1957.)]
The insatiable thirst for productivity and profit in GNP has led the major markets deeper and deeper into native lands of others, until there will be nothing left for anyone in this world as far as resources are concerned. To stop such actions, first there must be a revolutionary movement based on ideas rather than social-economic interests.
More importantly, one can see the Imperialist forces of the "companies" carrying out the same capitalist agenda of the hegemony that they have since Joseph Conrad wrote his book, and the same job which Christopher Columbus signed on for on a "company contract" to explore resources abroad for Spain.
One also sees the devotion to war as a stimulant for "Mankind" as well as "Progress" aka the continuation of "Manifest Destiny." As Christopher Hedges recently explained in a bookstore talk for his book "War is a Force that Gives Us Meaning" these retired military types are addicted to conflict like a drug, it gives them a sense of purpose and strength and is as stimulating to them as a hit of cocaine. But this drug leaves the dead and suppressed in its wake.
These dogs of war are little more than that, the security hyenas for the controlling interests whipped into a frenzy to castrate the fluffy bunny. Unfortunately these hyenas may not always be so easy to control and eventually one may ask what comes first the Imperialist or the hyena, and who will ultimately control the other the hyena or the Imperialist. Only one thing is certain in this contest of jackals those who do not feed on the offal of others will find themselves awash in a degraded world of pain, conflict, and hostility. We must do better than this, we must take back the power of the people for the people, and not the dogs of war.
