I am contemplating (if I decide to do Law):

BComm/LLB
BSc/LLB
BEng/LLB

(I know the last one's suicide since engineering is already 25 hrs/ wk =/ but im used to a hard life so I would still consider it)

My question is what job prospects would be available to me in each? I'm especially clueless about the latter two.

I agree. :uhhuh: ( B Commerce (Accounting)/LLB :p)

From what I can gather:

Eng/LLB= Patent Law
Sci/LLB= Too broad, too hard to cover...eg. Comp Sci/LLB will be different to a B Sci (Nanotech)/LLB, which one are you thinking of at the moment?

Something without too much lawyers specialising in at the moment.
I guess nanotech is more promising then? I dont mind which area of science because I'm pretty much equally interested in all fields (except biological, medical sciences; i hate that :))

What are the prospects for BCom/LLB? What should my Com major in? Say, if i major in finance instead, what then does the prospects become?

And as a side note, what's the difference between accounting and finance as majors? On their own, what job prospects are available?

Both create excellent job opportunities. If I was asked a question like this on the spot I would go with an Accounting major simply because Accounting can be applied to every sector of every industry. Finance however, cannot. :)
If I was to do Finance/LLB I would go to one of the sandstone universities to do it mainly because of the wider/broader connections it has with the outside industry. :uhhuh: :)

Don''t forget that Commerce has many other majors as well and each have their different advantages and disadvantages. ie. marketing, economics, logistics, HRM....etc

Accounting is like book-keeping (think annual reports) and finance is things like investing, share market ect.

What kind of degree/major would you combine law with if you were interested in criminal law? How big a difference does it make if you combine law with a degree/major not fully suited to the aspect of law you end up wanting to work in?

probably arts - you could do sociology, psychology or maybe crime subjects which i dont even know exist

but it doesnt matter that much, because you still get the law degree out of it and thats the most important thing

Hmmm, see my main difficulty here is that because I won't be getting a UAI high enough to get into combined law at UNSW or USYD straight out of high school, I'll probably end up doing combined law at Macquarie and trying to transfer across after the first year. While I'd get a much higher GPA doing commerce (and have a greater chance of success), my interest, as I mentioned before is in criminal law :(

Well Farc. for me there's a chance I may not get the mark for a Sydney University, and I'm thinking of criminal law as well, so I put ANU down as a preference (Asian Studies (Spec)/Law) because I want to learn an asian language + that degree lets me study for a year in Asia as well.

The only real disadvantage of ANU (from what I've heard/understand) is that you'll have to move out of Sydney, and may not be able to network like you could at say Sydney.

Oh and I think a Captain Planet joke would probably fall flat on its face here wouldn't it :(

I like the idea now :p Though, I wouldn't be surprised if I'd have changed my mind even a few months down the track :p

really...com law = being employed in a bank...im tired of people who say that any other combo other than com/law = no employment prospects...= a whole heap of com students that hate what they do all so they can tell Freehills in their interview they understand accounting...
how does telling freehills that you know accounting work?

also from my perspective...I hate when com/law people have the perception they're better than us straight com people - get off it, you have no better employment prospects at a large accounting firm than us, and our advantage is we start work 2 years before you and hence will be promoted quicker (and dont say cause you have the LLB, there will be exceptions for you in the graduate rotation - its all the same)

commerce/law bashers....:p

Minai, this is for arguments sake...don't you think that people who do the extra LLB will be doing very different jobs in the end?

Asqy= Not ''no employment prospects'' but ''higher or lower employment prospects''. Since labour is derived demand, the economy will usually dictate employment opportunities and so far, commerce is undisputably favoured. :)

haha, I admire your courage Santa!

I agree there are a bazillion of us, and I get slightly annoyed hearing about people that hate law so much they drop it after first semester and go straight commerce because you know there is someone out there who really wanted to do law and just missed out... but I do think there would be some areas where having a law degree would give you the definite edge over others - I know taxation is a big area for law with alot of subjects you can choose...

I guess it all just depends on what you want to get into. If I just wanted to do accounting or marketing ect. I would do straight commerce. If I wanted to specialise in taxation I would do comm/law - if I wanted to work at the ACCC with Trade Practices I would go comm/law ect. ect.
