How important are ranks in relation to our HSC marks?

I'm 3rd in Modern History and if I don't do well tomorrow, I hope my rank will do something for me...

yeah, i want to know this as well. I was coming second in Chemistry, with a raw assessment mark of 91, but I really screwed up the exam MAJORLY! I'm so hoping the rank will help me in some way shape or form otherwise i'm so screwed!

say u are ranked 3rd

50% of yoru total hsc mark will be the exam mark u get
the other 50% will be the 3rd highest exam mark from your cohort

the process is actually a tad more complex, but thats basically how it works out

rank...ur uai mark is based on both ur hsc and ur school rank.

so say if u come 2nd in ur school, yet in ur hsc ur school gets: 100, 98, 93 (for simplicity only 3 people) and u got the 93, then ur hsc mark is 93, your school mark is 98 and ur uai mark is the average: 96 (rounded up) - im pretty sure this is right, but i may be wrong.
so you have to do well in both school and hsc. if u do well in school, and ur school does well in the hsc, then u'll be fine :)

You are both wrong. You do your HSC exam and get a raw mark. This mark is aligned and this is the mark you receive on your HSC results. The BOS works out your class average for the exam, and compares this to the class average for internal assesments. The internal assesments are then moderated so that the class exam averages and assesment averages are equal. The person ranked 1st in assesments gets the highest exam mark as their assesment mark. The person ranked last in the class gets the lowest exam mark as their internal assesment mark. The rest of the class is determined by an equation which the BOS does not release.

I forgot about the 2nd part of your question; your aligned exam mark and moderated assesment mark each count for 50% of your final result. However considering the moderation of internal assesments is based on a class avereage for the exams, your exam performance is somewhat more important than your assessments

to whomever really cares about this:

i will do an example of a class with 5 students
this is how the bos do it

student -- internal mark

bob --------------- 80%
bill ---------------- 75%
ben --------------- 78%
brad -------------- 92%
bango ------------ 45%

total INTERNAL pool of marks = 370 (80 +75 + 78...)

now they issues percentages of your internal mark over the total internal pool of marks

bob ---- 0.216% (80/370)
bill ----- 0.203% (75/370)
ben ----- 0.211% etc
brad ----- 0.249% etc
bango --- 0.122% etc

ok now internals are finished...thats all we need, lets label those percentages - INTERNAL PERCENTAGES

now the students sit the external exam

bob ----- 75%
bill ------- 81%
ben ------ 62%
brad ------ 89%
bango------73%

now we total the EXTERNAL pool of marks = 380 (75+81...)

now to allocate aligned internal assessment marks, each student gets his INTERNAL PERCENTAGE of the total EXTERNAL pool of marks.

lets call these INTERNAL ALGINED MARKS

bob ---- 0.216% x 380 = 82%
bill ----- 0.203% x 380 = 77%
ben ----- 0.211% x 380 = 80%
brad ----- 0.249% x 380 = 95%
bango --- 0.122% x 380 = 46%

now we take 50% of the INTERNAL ALIGNED and 50% of the EXTERNAL mark

bob ------ 37.5 + 41 = 78.5%
bill ------- 40.5 + 38.5 = 79%
ben ------ 31 + 40 = 71%
brad ----- 44.5 + 47.5 = 92%
bango --- 36.5 + 23 = 59.5%

and abracadbra, your hsc aligned mark for that subject
