You must be thinking of Photovoltaic engineering McLake.

Photonics engineering is about applying light (in particular lasers) to technology (e.g. optical fibres, compact discs, optoelectronics, optical processors etc). There seems to be quite a bit of future in this field due in applications like telecommunications, biomedical equiptment, and even electronics. It is related to electrical engineering, which is a broader field.
