They don't tell you what the average GPA is. ALL you find out is your final mark and final GPA. But most unis use a bell curve which means the average GPA would be somewhere between pass/credit for all courses, at least it would make sense that way.

mark cutoffs vary. basically, the average mark at the university of sydney is around 65.
Pass: 50-64
Credit: 65-74
Distinction: 75-84
High Distinction: 85-100

no it's not. a credit is the average, which is hardly an achievement.

It's pretty much the same at UNSW

considering unis have continual assessments, you will need to do work throughout the semester. basically, if you are in the top 50% then you get a credit (in many cases). 2 weeks cramming is quite a lot though.

What I should have said is that people should not get discouraged by a credit esp. comming straight out of highschool as the higher marks are less commonly given out.

The work required depends on the course. In law I have to work my arse of for C's/D's where in Arts its a lot less effort for D's HD's.

just coz a course is 85 to get HD dont make it harder than another uni that requires only 80.

my friend goes to a uni where the HD requirement is 86-100.

but the course is setout so that 45% of the marks are gained through pracs, TAKE HOME EXAMS where most people dont even do it themselves!!!!

so even before you sit the final exam most students would of gotten 40/100. easiest subject ever to get a HD.

in the final exam all u need is a miserable score like 20% and u will still pass. get a half decen mark like a 60% then you'll end up nearly with a HD

^ I think that at most uni's , somewhere around the top 5% is an HD, whether that is an 80 or 85 (and so on for the lower grades).

So an 80 at a uni where 80 is the top 5% HD cut-off, is the same as an 85 at a uni where 85 is the top 5% HD cut-off. Although some uni's have a larger or smaller proportion of higher grades, e.g. Monash is supposed to have a tougher grading system.

Correct me if I'm wrong

in engineering if you can get a credit you take it no questions asked.
a credit final result may be 'the average' (62 to 67) but being capable of doing the workload required to be spot on average is still one damn fien achievement

Doing maths at uni and having a lot of friends in engineering, a fair few with internships, I don't particularly see whats so great about just breaking into the middle of the pack.

wrong. an average mark is still an average mark. How is it an achievement is 50% of people are still scoring higher than you?
