So I was doing this q:



and I got to part iv) and did it like this



but the answers say this:



where did I go wrong?

You used the formula from part (iii) to go from your infinite sum to a closed form.

However, the condition from (iii) is that -1 < x < 1.

But your x value is 2014, which fails that condition, so you cannot use it.

It's okay because you got this question from your school teacher, who got it from an old textbook and then changed the number to 2014 (to match the year), and you don't actually know from where it comes *wink*. Any coincidence is purely coincidental.
