Basically what the thread says. I am not a big fan of private because I find it hard to get the most out of that. I have heard a few options like Art of Smart, Matrix, Talent, Dr Du (apparently), Project Academy and Alchemy. I do maths at matrix and would not like the really big class setting if that is possible to avoid. I am not bad at English so I dont need like remedial help lol I just want to get in the A range. Thanks!

I had a trial at Project.

They have 4-person classes so it's somewhat personal and you can ask your tutor for some feedback or advice, but it might not be as efficient as 1-on-1 tutoring. They're actually called tutorials rather than classes and you can book as many as you want without extra cost as long as there are vacancies, which is a plus. Sometimes there might be less than 4 in a class if you're lucky, in which case it can be more personalised. However, the reason why I didn't stay was because sometimes the tutors know a particular student very well and concentrate on them disproportionately which obviously isn't ideal.

If you're potentially hesitant about being tutored, I recommend against English tutoring entirely lol. There's a toooon of exemplary essays online that can be accessed for free, and many English tutors literally just regurgitate this to you at the cost of $70 per lesson. If you want individualised feedback on your essays, trust me, go to your teachers since that's quite literally their job

not all teachers do their jobs- mine recommended i get a tutor because she refused to give me specialised help even tho i was getting band 3s in her class. sounds like u had a shit tutor or have never been tutored in general because my band 3s quickly became band 5s with tutoring. they do more than just 'regurgitate' exemplar essays that are allegedly band 6s

Hi - don't get me wrong, an effective tutor may help you in the instance that you're genuinely struggling in english. however, the post said that remedial tutoring was not necessary and was only needed for supplementary learning.

i'm genuinely open to the idea of receiving extra help if u have a negligent teacher! however, in the instance that you have a teacher who's at least willing to provide feedback on most of ur work, i find that being tutored for other subjects to be more valuable lol. i work in this field and have met my fair share of tutors who don't provide valuable input for the price that you're paying for. instead, most of the resources that they provide are similar - if not the same - as those online. it's good that you had a great tutor, but in a skills-based subject like english, i find that just practicing and deriving from exemplary responses can also yield high results. to each to their own though!

go private but not with some bozo fresh out of year 12 who got a decent atar and thinks they're qualified to teach solely because of that with no prior experience.

find someone with a lot of experience teaching english regardless of whether they got a 99.95 atar or not - while a base level of competency is obviously needed, the most important part from a learning perspective is having a tutor who understands how concepts are communicated and learned by students.

even in a small class setting, unless cost is an issue, there isn't really a substitute for having a tutor where the sole use of their time is for your benefit, having attention split between a class of 2 is 50% less of that, and exponentially more so the larger the class becomes.

what does going private have to do with anything you just said though? tutoring companies like art of smart usually let u pick ur tutor and alchemy has an option to only select tutors with a certain amount of experience. idk about other companies but i assume its pretty standard to be able to request an experienced tutor.

by private, i meant a private tutor as in one-on-one, my bad if that's not the proper term, i don't think it matters how or where you find them.

if you can get an experienced tutor through those companies then great, but many of them also autohire anyone above a certain atar or with a state rank on the presumption they can teach, which they often can't.

oh i thought private tutors were tutors that aren't part of a company. in that case everything you said makes perfect sense

This is very fair but I am also a die hard Project Academy fan especially for English my tutor saved my grades so hard I joined at the start of year 12 and I got an A (17) in my common module essay when I usually get like 13-14. To be fair though all her classes are always full now and i have heard some of the other tutors are a bit questionable from my friends

I suppose I might be a bit picky because I'm looking to improve my marks from lower to higher A-range, so I need some very personalised help for that to happen. I do really like the vibe at Project though - if you don't mind, could you DM me who this tutor you're talking about is? I might have to return to Project closer to the LEAPs.
