Hi All,

I'm not sure if this is the best spot on the web for this, but everyone here is usually helpful. I am in year 11 now in NSW, but am still undecided on what university and career options to take. I am studying the following:

English Advanced
Mathematics
Mathematics Extension 1
Biology
Chemistry
German
Software Design & Development

Here are a few options I am considering, but maybe if someone who is involved with such things could give me a brief run-down, recommendations, and if you don't mind saying, things like work hours, demand (in Sydney, or NSW, or Australia), and pay would be awesome to help me out. Also what qualifications/courses/training is necessary?

Option 1 - Medical Scientist
So if I chose this, I will most likely do a Combined Medical Science/IT degree, and work in a cancer research laboratory (I've been unfortunate enough to have lots of contact with cancer). I need a pretty high ATAR to get in though (around 94). I am good at science and computing, but especially enthusiastic with chemistry.

Option 2 - Computer/Web Programmer
I don't really want to be involved in the "support" or consumer-based IT industry, but I find interest in the backend technical aspects. I already hold a database programming job, plus obviously my own web design company (www.scottnugent.net </plug> :p).

Option 3 - Concert Audio/Lighting Technician
So I am already the school technical director for everything we do, I LOVE doing audio stuff, lighting design is fun as hell, and there is something so alluring about sneaking round in the dark and ending up pulling of an awesome concert that excites and impresses. I'm pretty good with the whole thing from planning to setup to running.

Thanks so much to everyone is advance. :)

Do you really like medicine? Your other suggestions are more technical than biological. If you really want to do research, you're going to have to do a PHD. Again, research is a lifestyle which is pretty shitty. You'll either have to work at a uni with a shitty lifestyle and low pay, or work in a private research and those company's only last a few years, so you'll have very low job security.

If you're serious about cancering, consider doing a degree in diagnostic radiography and specialise in nuclear medicine.

but especially enthusiastic with chemistry.
If you're like most guys and don't enjoy the touchy-feely shit of medicine (ie, not gay) then you should look in to Chemical Engineering. I've finished uni, and if I had my time again I'd do Chemical Engineering and work in a brewery.

If you're serious about the medicine stuff, consider a course like Biomedical Engineering. However, I don't recommend it, as esoteric fields of engineering mean you'll have trouble finding a job (I know this first hand).
Option 2 - Computer/Web Programmer
Don't do IT/Comp. Sci, do Software Engineering and make sure you apply for an internship within your first year.
Option 3 - Concert Audio/Lighting Technician
You need a little more ambition than being a roadie. Fuck this option off.
