After a lot of thinking, I reckon I want to study languages (German and Spanish/other EU language) and also gain some sort of qualification for either primary or secondary school teaching. It'd be great if there was some overseas componant of the course.

Does anyone know about the ways this could be done? I've been looking at uni sites all day, and while I've found some courses that look good, I'm still a bit confused about whether you do a B Arts and B Ed or a Dip Ed, or if there's some course which can combine the two...

Thanks for any help.

USyd has its BA/BEd combined degree options, where you do units from both education AND arts subjects at the same time. In this case, your language(s) and whatever requirements you have to do for your education part. The degree you'd probably look for is BA/BEd (Primary) for Primary teaching and BA/BEd (Secondary: Humanities and Social Sciences). (CSP codes 511600 and 511605 respectively).

With the DipEd: Here, you usually do your first degree in whatever, whether its a BA in languages, etc etc. You'll then enrol in the DipEd and do that. A lot of the teachers in my old HS seemed to have just done that, specialised in their areas of interest and then gone back and qualified as a teacher afterwards.

For Department of Education requirements it seems that they don't really care what you get as long as there's at least a Dip Ed somewher ein your qualifications. Whether you do a BA then followed by a BEd, or both at the same time, it really doesn't seem to matter. Spose it depends on how long you want to spend in uni ;).

As for the overseas component, in whatever uni you go to there will be exchange opportunities, USyd's exchange agreements including good old deutsche Universitäten like Albert-Ludwigs in Freiburg, Die Freie Uni. in Berlin, others in Bamberg, Potsdam etc. Also with the Univeristy of Geneva in Switzerland and the University of Vienna in Austria.

Im studying a B Ed Primary at ACU National as well as a Certificate in Languages at Macquarie. I was lucky enough to have my language classes offered in external mode so they mail me out the things (though we still have on campus tutorials). I am not sure if they offer those languages in external mode.. something to look into. With languages at MQ they have a really good exchange program (with connections to so many international universities) and offer heaps of sponsored places for study trips (6 Croatian students went recently in July for 3 weeks to do a summer school course over there and had the airfare paid for with a university scholarship). I'm doing the certificate (which I will transfer into the diploma after I complete 9cp) purely out of interest, I might teach overseas one day or even at Croatian schools here and it is always good to have something extra up your sleeve.
