So, who else is doing King Lear? And if you are doing it, have you had to find different interpretations of it? Our teachers keep going on about how we should know different interpretations like feminist, marxist, humanist etc, and I can't seem to get my head around it, so to speak.

well ur teacher is talking about the different readings that can be interperated through differnet productions...
eg. shakespeare would of originally meant for the play to show the evilness of goneril and reagn and how women should not disobey male authourity. Whereas, in a feminist reading, goneril and regan can be seen as strong female roles and that lear is just a misogynistic prick. A marxist reading tries to convey that it is lear's fault as an autocratic ruler that causes his demise.

All these disffernt ideas can be displayed through different production techniques! just remeber that

At first I also had trouble getting my head around this module. Heres how I think you should approach it:

The thing to remember that it is primarily a close reading of the text. You need to be extremely familiar with King Lear; in the way you would previously have studied Shakespeare. E.g. plot, themes, context, characters etc. etc.

The other part of the module is to examine how this very text has been read and received in different contexts. Therefore you should select a few different established readings on the text, E.g. Feminism, New Historicism, Marxism, etc. Understand how the play can be perceived and valued in various ways, in accordance with the context in which it is being read/performed, and the prevailing values of a circumstance other than Shakespeares.
To cover the received aspect, view a number of productions of the play, (film or stage) and/or use information from some significant past ones. Try and identify within these productions, how an original text can and has been utilised in other manifestations, and how productions of this text might emphasize the values from some of the aforementioned readings.

Once you have done all this, in order to remind yourself that the actual text itself, King Lear, is really the very essence of the module, try to consider that given the perpetual engangement with the text; if the play is constantly subjected to criticism and analysis, and if there are always contentious directorial considerations evident when appropriating the text, does this give further meaning to the original text, and ensure its posterity, or to use the syllabus jargon, grant it textual integrity?

Good luck!!

if you went to that english seminar thing at wesley theatre you would have heard those. That David Ritchie guy talked about it, though it was boring since i didn't read the text at that time last year.

well yeah i'm doing my hsc this year also, and i'm doing and nearly finished king lear.

but i think u should also look at the past questions related to it.
because ur realli looking at the production and interpretations and readings. all questions are centered around that.
i recommend u get some study guides and realli know it back to front.
why he's suck a complex character? and develop some opinions of your own, like incest, between lear and cordelia is a popoluar one with me and friends lol.

study guides: get smart and york notes

Hey thanks! Your advice has actually been really helpful, I'm still not all that confident about Lear, but I think I'm starting to catch on :)

There's a theatre company who are going to perform King Lear at Bondi Theatre from March 19-April 12. It's at night but I think I'm gonna go anyway. It's supposed to be a pretty good performance

I second that ! And Edgar was really dumb.
But they have this really cool thing with a wheel happening the whole way through, very clever...
They were booked to stay behind and answer questions but then they pulled the 'too tired' trick. If they say anything good to any of you, mention it !! ;)

Oh, and for the person who asked when it starts, they say 7.30, but we were there a bit before, say 7.15 and ppl were waiting outside the door already. Got to kind of a crush (we were fighting it out with this other school :D). They ended up opening late then, about 7.45 But the actual theatre place is quite small, so I dunno why that happened.

I went and saw it tonight with my friends. It was ok but the SEATS were so incredibly uncomfortable - and seeing as its nearly 3 hours long I suggest you take a cushion or a pillow of some sort.
As for the actual play, the sound effects were so annoying, they kept playing them at odd moments, it kinda detracted from the content of the scenes. In my opinion, the guy who played Edmond was really good, so were Gonerill and Lear. Edgar was ok - he had a lisp though! lol, my friends thought he was adorable.

yeah the wheel thing was great! Do you reckon it symbolised anything? for example the idea of the wheel of fortune in the play, i.e "what goes around comes around."?

yeh ditto they were excellent but ewwww Edgar- esp when he took off his shirt....

Yeh the wheel was also very clever- and i think it was supposed to symbolise the wheel of fortune but it was good how they used it for the hovel, throne etc...

Yeah, I reckon the wheel of fortune because they kept all those references in (we have to consider the choices they made for the production, blah blah blah, so I've been trying to figure what they cut and what they kept).

They also had that weird pipe music playing everytime there were gods/fortune references so for me that emphasised it.

Also the wheel of fire, because the quote they put on their website etc is ".but I am bound
Upon a wheel of fire, that mine own tears
Do scald like molten lead".
