Why French? (1 Viewer)

I want to do study one language at university and can't decide. I'm currently leaning towards french because it's a beautiful language, it's widely spoken outside of france (ex-colonies etc) and it has some roots in english, so should be easier than, say, cantonese.
Why did you fine people take up the frog tongue?

One listen to "Hymne a` l'amour" and "Non, je ne regrette rien- Edith Piaf, or "Y'a d'la joie" - Charles Aznavour and you hopefully will see why. :uhhuh:

For me I have no idea how to explain it. It's just fun . I mean, main advantage over a language like Canto, no new characters to learn/sooo many diff. tones etc, but I suppose difficulty shouldn't factor in. (I think I replied to the question "Why German?" in German with similarness in it .).

While probably not the most functional in Australia, there's always that omnipresent and for some reason compulsory French linguistic presence everywhere. UN, Olympics etc.

It's just fascinating.

A nice Romance-family language too.

My French circumstances are sort of murky too. In year 9 a group of friends and I just sort of fell into doing French because it was pretty much the only lang that was on offer, but that said they offered us Open High which would have broadened the pallette somewhat, but French - in remembering the mini hell it was in junior years - was what we chose.

I suppose I like it because it's so arranged. Neat grammar rules, tidy. I suppose that can be said about all Romance languages, maybe even all languages (mmm English. nah...). (NO MORE "SUPPOSE"'s!). Also, when one of these neat grammatical rules clicks, it's kind of like this personal epiphany and conquer of something that is very satisfying. Slimy, yet satisfying, even, to rip off the Lion Kind (slimy part - when it's frustrating and confusing and doens't make sense; satisfying - where said epiphany occurs).

SO true!

I can't work out why I like it, but there's some sort of attraction/allure the language has.


I've yet to put it to practical use in a foreign country, but that's something I look forward to.

Do french!!

It's very logical, much more so than English. It's beautiful to listen to. erg english. And you can put on French accents in English which is fun. Plus everyone always tries to be pretentious by inserting french into their normal speech-now you can too! or at least understand what they mean when they deshabillees. And there is nothing cuter then a guy with a French accent.

But there are actually some more concrete advantages-thing like it being one of the official languages of the UN (If you are going to work in the UN you need English and French or English and Spanish), along with the Olympics, Pacific countries, Western Africa.

but i love it. it gets to a really strange stage, where you can't speak english or french and your mind goes crazy, but then it's okay again and you start doing wacky things like dreaming in French. lots of fun. ^very satisfying!! It's also a good way of traing your brain, because it's logical.
