I've been curious about this. Two theories exist -

a) It will be accepted, but hand-in time will be logged (as it already is)
b) It won't be accepted, and one would be screwed even though the uni recieves a hard copy.

Opinions? Has anyone handed in a late paper via turnitin?

Option a) is correct. Like the rest of the uni, they want students to be able to turn late papers in, which I have in the past.

It depends when your lecturer sets the closing date as, most leave it open for at least a few days to allow people with special consideration to submit. Up until the closing time (which, as I just said, isn't necessarily the same as the due time) you can submit, but the submission time will be logged, and if your uni is anything like mine, you will lose marks, even if your paper based copy was in on time.

They leave it open far longer than a few days. I've never seen a subject close it faster than a month (and that was because the lecturer was going overseas and needed them in by a certain time), most set the closing date for the end of semester.

All assignments in certain subjects have to go through turnitin, even the ones that are received months late. Regardless of why a student hands an assignment in late, there are provisions for late work - usually marks deducted.

I don't mind about the loosing marks, I'm more worried about handing it in a day late (and loosing 2/2% marks or so) and then having turnitin not accepting the paper AT ALL, and then failing that assessment because of that.

But sounds like it'll be ok :)

I'm interested - can you submit random papers into turnitin and find out the % it's been plagerised?

Since its under your name, unless you could find someone willing to get a possible fail and plaigarism accusation brought up against them, that might be a bit hard.

Theoretically yes, practically, most likely not.

dang. i just always wanted to know what gets flagged for plagerism. My papers are 100% original (well obviously sourced and referenced and stuff). but ive always been curious how turnitin works.

You can plagiarise your arse off and still get a score of 0%...Turnitin doesn't detect "plagiarism" as such, but rather direct matches from text in strings of 8 words or more...so if you have 8 words in a row the same as someone else, it will be counted...but if the first 5 are the same, one different, and then another couple the same, it won't be counted

Seriously, if you're at uni and you need a convener to hold your hand that much, something's off.

wtf, you're attacking me tonight or something? i have never had to submit to turnitin, we didn't get an assignment sheet, it's not written where the assignment is outlined on the unit outline. it was mentioned in passing in the lecture they gave about the assignment. it stuck in my head because i have never done it before but i couldn't find it written on any of my subjects. luckily i transcribed the lecture and was looking at it a few days ago

rofl *sigh*

You've never had to submit via turnitin? I think only one subject this sem and one last sem didn't require me to for the first assignment. Maybe it's more common in subjects that you don't do...

haha, its easier when you have online submission, to Blackboard, or whatever, but if you only have to hand in a hardcopy, its a bitch.

I prefer hard copy. I have some paranoia that it'll be lost in the bureaucratic system and just be sent out into space instead. The thought of some alien reading my essay on the holocaust gives me the heeby-jeebies.
