hmm.... i though winamp was popular but didn't know so many people used it..

tell me what is so great about it apart from the low cpu usage and the fast library search.

im still sticking with my winamp v2.5e (x86) - Oct 3 1999
media player takes awhile to load (ok a few seconds more than winamp)
and the higher versions of winamp take awhile to load too... yet all these stupid new snazzy features and pretty graphics are stupid and useless... old winamp, instant loading and simple...

Winamp 2.xx and 5.xx are still very good. 3 was rather trash. But Foobar2000 is the king in my eyes. So much customisability, so many nifty features, the only one to consider if you are REALY into sound quality, yet it isn't at all bloated.

Not very pretty though, and for most Winamp 2.xx and 5.xx will do the same in a much prettier fashion.

I think I know what you mean.
It happens to me sometimes with big avi files.

it does?

never happend to me...

what kind of video?
some divx avi files.. probably mpeg as well but I havent really tried.
it says "Connecting" which takes about 5 seconds and while it still says "Connecting" the file is already played but only sound is heard.

so if I want to see the first 5 seconds or so of the video, I need to press Stop and Play again (the second time the video comes straight away)

The beauty of winamp lies in its plugins. There are thousands of plugins for input, output, visualisations, games, DSP/effects and encoding. The reason I first got into winamp was so I could easily listen to chiptunes without a specialised program for each format. Now I use winamp 5, though I would still prefer to use winamp 2 over WMP 10. I like how the winamp playlist and library are organised and how the how a viisualisation window isn't the focal componant in the standard set up, unlike WMP. Don't get me wrong, i still use WMP10 or MPC to watch videos, but i like prefer winamp for listening to music.

Its like comparing WMP and MPC.

It just does the job without all the crap attached.

I use XMMS and MPlayer.
Good on you. Though I don't think it has anything to do with Winamp other than look like it.
