Hey everyone. I'm trying to plan out a way to build a wireless network (for at least three computers) in my house, and was wondering what options I have regarding broadband connection. Are there any wireless router/hubs around? Around how much would they cost, and how many terminals can they handle?

I know this is a bit much, but are there any wireless hubs that also have ethernet ports? You know, for lan parties and stuff. Who knows, I may actually host one someday.

Anyway, thanks for your help everyone.

i just purchased a D-Link 614 + Wi-Fi router, with 4 Port 22mbps for the wireless, not bad, it was a nice investment for my Pocket PC, this router should do you good, once you get broadband, e.g. ADSL, you just need to plug from the ADSL modem to the WAN porn in the router, and very little configuration is actually required. This router can handle up to 4 KMs Outdoors and 1 km Indoors. for Wi-Fi, USB Wi-Fi network cards are about 100 dollars.

Its a wlan router, with hard wire ports too.

But do these also serve as network hubs? I guess my initial question wasn't clear enough...

I'm looking for an "all-in-one" station, a wireless network hub which also serves as a broadband router. Do these things exist?

Yes the router i have is like that, the router acts like a server, you just leave it on 24/7 it connects to the net through plugging in your modem to the router, and you have 4 ports for just standard network setups using cables and i'm not sure how many users can connect via wireless but a fair bit, you can LAN with this router etc... it's all good, but for some applications like Games, you just have to get the port for it and forward it via the D-Link Web interface.

Excellent! I'm going to look this one up right now.

Then again, I've just been told that WiFi networks have a few problems, like lower security and signal interruption between rooms (steel beams etc). I guess I'll have to try it out for myself before I decide.

Thanks Winston, Sunny.

Yeah they are prone to errors, really Wi-Fi at it's stages are good for Pocket PC's and Laptops around the house, and also some desktop PC's like if you wanna have the net from your room all the way upstairs, but for LAN'ing i'd still stick with the traditional cables.

I didn't require to purchase CF Wi-Fi card, i purchased the HP iPaq 5500, the top of the line model, which has integrated 802.11, and Integrated Bluetooth, it's a better investment for it to be integrated as it's tested by the manufacturer etc.. but with CF Wi-Fi cards, what the problem is, it eats your batterys up even more as it wasn't specifcally designed for the model of the PPC. Anyways, there's nothing i needed to configure, my D-link router had the options for me to encrypt it etc, but i don't think it was necessary, so all i did was leave it like that, and on my PPC, i just turn on Wi-Fi connection when ever i want to , and it takes about 10 - 15 seconds to connect, and i'm on :)... BTW, do you own a PPC and Wireless home network yourself?

....i wish man!

my questions r mainly bcoz i wanted to c if ppl actually can use wifi, and how much they actually cost in aus. i am buying the palm operated sony clie nv-80 or sumthing similar, do u reckon i'd hav problems wif those in wireless networking?

and on tat pt, since u hav a pocket pc, do u find it more user friendly than from wat u noe abt palms? lyk 4 instance, does the pocket pc allow u better operation wif programs such as words, etc than comparing to the non-'original' word iprocessing softwares on palm systems?

thx u

Right.... well i wanted a Sony Clie myself, it's very equipped and stylish, but the turn down was Palm OS, i didn't like it, lol i'm a very aesthetic person so i go with the looks, and Windows PPC looked nice so yeah, besides it's better i believe i like it and it works good, haven't touched Palm OS but from the looks of things it's not my cup of tea, but Pocket PC is good because you synchronize things across your desktop to your PPC, like Inbox e-mail , contacts, etc from your Microsoft Outlook profiles etc..., I think in terms of word processing both of them will be much similar, the good thing about clie is most of them come with a keyboard, but most pocket pc's require a seperate keyboard attachment which i don't mind, because i use the Transcriber alot, which is writing on the screen and it transfers the electronically written text as computer text, how much is the model you're getting for? my one cost me 1100, it's the top of the line right now and it's really good.
