Would it play *.avi files burnt onto a DVD-R?

Assuming they were encoded with whatever version(s) of the divx/xvid codecs the player supports, yes.

Hmm...ok.

Would trial and error be the best way to check for this? Beause I imagine it would be hard to check for versions of the *few* DVD's.
