Most people are willing to pay a lot more for a physical book than an Internet membership. You can't compare Excel study guides with BOS. I think people will be reluctant to sign up and just continue to use what is free.

There are better ways to make money.
Exactly, there is a difference between Text Books and Study Notes, so they cannot be compared.

BoS could use, Google Ad's? Pop Ups? etc.

A friend has already made $60 AUS in the last 2 months from using them on his site, and his site isn't all that popular with under 100 members.

If BoS did it, im sure they would make a fair bit.

Uh, but pop up ads are for stupid, annoying websites that don't value their loyal subscribers.

BOS values us :)

BOS already has numerous ads on the website, and it gets quite a lot of promotion at the Sydney universities.

Look, I fail to see the issue. If you don't want to pay $20 a year, then don't. I've finished the HSC and won't be using the notes, and I'll still pay. God, why is this such an issue?

Good luck with the model but as a Teacher who comes on to answer questions and help out people, I wonder if I will keep giving my time for free, when this is becoming a commercial model.

It becomes commercial? So what Michael Moore.
No, i'm not Michael Moore, but I do like making a good discussion on a few topics.
But the premium notes mean you will be getting a higher quality of study notes. See it as a certificate of verification. You can rest easy in the knowledge that the notes are current and correct.
Trading notes with other students in the forums is fine and all, but how do you know they're correct?
That is probably the first (and only) good thing I can see with paying a fee to see these notes, is that they will be verified to be correct and current.

Trading notes with other students do mean that you cannot be sure if they are current or even correct.

You might not, and i’m not attacking you here, see the issue regarding it as you have finished the HSC and you will not need the notes.

Even though you will still support BoS, you yourself probably don't need the study notes.

I have no problem supporting BoS, It is a great community with many resources available at your finger tips, 24/7.

But the issue is in my eyes.
1. The date that "The Premium Service" will begin.
2. Paying $20 and already half way through the HSC and wont need the notes in 6 months is to me, a rip off, as I really only need to pay $10 (As we (Year 12) only have 6 months left.
3. Their are other ways to gain money.

Another one.

Honestly, why is "commercialism" an issue? It is not detracting from the quality of the website. The subject forums will continue to operate and people will still have access to them.

Since 2001? this website has operated, frankly, due to the hard work of the admins, without asking a cent from us. And suddenly now because the website is asking us to feel free to contribute a small annual sum, you're all crying out at the evil of commercialism?

Honestly, what?

I'm stirring the pot a little, giving some people new idea's and challenging them as to why 'Premium Memberships' should be in place and why not, it will also give the owner's (Don't know exactly who they are) a chance to explain themselves why and to take a stance and back up their own decision for it.

Yes Katie and for the last 3 years I have been coming on to help people, especially in the lead up to the HSC. Without asking for a cent.

What have I received from it?
Nothing, except fo the satisfaction of passing on help to people who need it.

Yes the Admins deserve the recognition and I have no problem with that. At the same time, people who have helped out in the background with the forums are also what helped make this site so useful.

I might as well go and become a paid tutor or rejoin the advice line and be paid.

No, you're being trivial. Why is April such a big problem? It's the 4th month of the year. The HSC is in the 10th month. ???

There are other ways of gaining money. But as we've already discussed, they're not always as viable or user friendly.
Pop up ads annoy the hell out of people.

I don't think they understand that this will not impact on them in any way. They really don't.

Don't want to pay? THEN DON'T?

You still continue along with the same access as you have today.
Calm down, take a Berocca or something :) :p

It's more of an issue to pay or not to pay.

It's the issue of there is other way's to make money, don't forget that ;)

Read my above posts, I included I think 4 reason's why I have a problem with it.

Even if my problems don't change their decisions, I will still pay the $20, but I want to see these notes first, not download them etc, but just to see them to make sure I do get good quality stuff.

And when the website closes down due to a lack of funds? Who misses out then? Scores of HSC students who use the forums as an outlet?
The admins are not pocketing the money themselves. They are adding to the upkeep of the website, so that future HSC students can enjoy it like the previous year's.

As I recall, Google Ad's are not pop-ups.

It's half way through the Year 12 HSC Year, so why should they have to pay the FULL amount when they wont need the note's for the full year, Maybe it should be $10 per 6 months, that will give people more options as to if they say...after 2 months, don't like it, they then wouldn't have blown a full $20.

Don't say $20 isn't a lot of money, to some Students it mean's something.

Stop being such economic girlie men (socialists). The website already asks for voluntary contributions on the main home page, and this Premium Membership is exactly that. Voluntary.

If I hear another comment about the evils of commercialism, I'm going to cry and go and watch the bold and the beautiful.

Making money is fine, it's how making the money is conducted that can be a problem.

You previously suggested pop up ads. I merely pointed out that they are an unnecessary evil, especially when there are more viable and user friendly ways.

Are you kidding me? You're happy for BOS to allow the hosting of other ads, and for BOS to advertise itself on google to make money, yet you don't like the idea of a voluntary user contribution because it becomes commercial?
Sorry, what?

I think my lack of sleep is kicking in more now.

As I have said before, I would like to see these 'Premium Study Notes' then I will choose if it is worth paying for.

Making a donation is by all means great, Students should be already.

I said that very broadly, I wasn't focusing on BoS, rather every business that want's to make money, whether that be more hosting, profit, whatever the case.
