Are talking gore-porn effective? Or general suspense? I mean it's difficult to classify Horror these days. Everybody is so desensitised. The Ring jap. version just isn't that scary anymore. I think Japanese horror is overrated, at least it is now. Asian girls just don't make me shit my pants anymore.

I liked the hand held camera shakiness. It made me feel more uncertain about what was happening + therefore increased the effect of the bump in the night moments.

I thought Saw 1 and 2 were pretty scary, but the rest were shit. Exorcist (original) will always be no 1 for me though.

Hmmm I just don't find movies with a lot of gore and the occasionally "jumpy" scene scary... most of the time they look really trashy.

I would say Saw 1 and 2 are pretty effective horror movies but The Shining tops them for sure.

The original 'Children of the Corn'

As for the best horror.. the original 'Scream', because it points out the complete stupidity of one of my favourite genres.

"Old Boy".

A movie originated from Korea, based on a Japanese manga series.
By far one of the most psychologically and emotionally violent films I've seen, and yet you can't help but be in awe of it. Strays away from the conventional hollywood horror films with challenging directing and an engaging storyline. Winner of the Grand Prix at Cannes 2003 by a jury lead by Quentin Tarantino, and currently in the process of being remade by Spielberg and Will Smith as the lead. When I left the cinamas with a friend, she said "That was amazing, now let us never speak of it again." I definately recommend this film to the well-informed and educated movie-watcher.

Truly a remarkable film.

I second that. I actually wanted the camera man to be killed first; that way, maybe the camera will steady a bit. That film was definitely effective in giving anyone vertigo.
