I've been reading some of the threads here, but i still dont really understand something... When you sit for HSC will you always get the mark that corresponds with your rank.

So basically, if your ranked second, will you always get the second highest mark obtained by your cohort in the exam?

So does this mean that the mark you actually get for your HSC exam is most probably someone else's???

If what you say is correct (you get the exam mark that corresponds to your rank) then yes, it is possible that the mark you receive could be someone else's. However, if you rank first, it's unlikely that your actual exam mark would be the worst in your cohort, obviously. In fact, if you rank first, and you do some decent quality studying for the final HSC exam, then you'll probably receive the best exam mark of your cohort.

Are you sure that you always get the final HSC exam mark that corresponds to your rank? This seems rather ridiculous, actually. You could simply achieve the top rank (first) by doing well in all internal assessments, then not study at all for the final HSC exam, just write your name on the paper, not write ANY answers in the answer booklet at all and achieve a mark of ZERO. Then the poor person who ranked last would recieve an exam mark of zero when in reality they achieved maybe 70/100. You'd still get a decent mark though, maybe 90/100 (if everyone else made a serious attempt at the exam). That's really unfair.

Yes, it doesn't sound right. However, the Board of Studies seem to have all sorts of weird marking processes, so I don't know either. Can anyone else help?

the hsc is an average between the modified ass. mark and the exam mark.

so in the case above, the student who came last in that situation would have received (0+70)/2 = 35, which is indeed unfair. BUT that would have been modified slightly upwards in the ass. mark. So give them >35.

but your incentive to do this would not be good. after all, you'd get (90+0)/2 = 45. BUT your exam mark wouldnt get modified so you'd be stuck on 45. which by all accounts is a fairly shit mark.

No, marks aren't swapped around, you don't get anyone else's marks. People use those words to describe what happens but it can be misleading.

Your exam mark is always your own exam mark.

The assessment marks of the whole class are adjusted depending on how the class performs on the exam. (To remove the effects of teachers marking leniently or harshly.)

You can read this thread to find out more about how assessment marks are moderated.
