Combined Law Transferees 2009 Thread (1 Viewer)

Hey there!

I thought it would be nice to dedicate a thread for 2009 UNSW Law Transferees. It would be nice to know some other people before Law Orientation Day. This thread would be useful for enrolment questions like credit transfers, also when we have assignments/case studies/statutes to analyse and complete it would be great to discuss different viewpoints and share some knowledge; not to mention finals time

I'm interested. Is everyone else doing Foundations, Contracts and Public Law too? X: I was told that it's generally the semester 1 sequence of study for first year law transferees. I am slightly nervous at this rather large spam of law all at once.

Yep there's a Law Orientation Day on the 26th February from 9am-2pm. It's split into two parts:

Part I - Introductory Workshop (from 9am-11am); pretty much compulsory for Transfer students.
Part II - Welcome and Lunch by Faculty.

With enrolling in subjects I only found out quite recently as well that we have to tkae Foundations, Contracts and Public Law in Semester 1... seems hectic, but I'm sure we'll manage

Ahaha oops, I think it's fairly evident that I pay absolutely no attention to the mail/notices they send me, *whistles innocently*.

26th of February aye: wait.. IS THAT FREE LUNCH?! I am so there.

It looks like it's going to be a lot of reading, and reading, and then reading some more. I hope I don't fall behind in note writing; apparently the reading load is like ~20 pgs per subject per week. Miss one week and that's a hell of a lot to catch up on.

Hmmm yeah from what I've heard the readings are sometimes intense, but if you spend some time reading them in between your breaks/days off (if you have any), you should be fine. Main thing is to read them beforehand otherwise you will fall behind. Plus we're gonna be mixing in with the 2nd year Law students too hehe.

Haha, hopefully it'll work out for you in the end. The lectures aren't too long and should be quite interesting. By the way, you gone into UNSW to get your Student Card yet? It only took me literally 5 minutes to get it today.

Yeah aren't the lectures pretty small as well? Sort of like, to promote discussion etc. I got my student card like 2-3 weeks ago. It says LAW. Zomg. Winrar.

Yeah they are around 28-30 people. I'm assuming the Contracts and Public Law lectures will be more like a combination of learning/discussion as we only have 2 hours per week of each one. Perhaps we may be in the same classes... hmmmm...
And lol at the student card, it says it's valid till 2012, they told me to come back next year so they can put a sticker over the 2009 travel concession. The student card looks so much like a credit card...

Out of interest what did you guys get to transfer in? Is UNSW's recommendation of 95 UAI and a credit average accurate?

96+ and a solid Distinction average. Not sure about other people though.

I've never heard of this recommendation; if you've seen it on the UNSW website it must be pretty recent. Else, I would go with what the law website says atm, which is:

Transfer applicants are assessed on 50% UAI and 50% tertiary grades. Entry is very competitive and generally students require a UAI of 97 and a grade point average of 6.0 (distinction) in their first year of study.

I had a UAI of 94.2 & a GPA of 6.25.

Yep I'm a UNSW Law transferee as well - although because I'm transferring from an unrelated degree, I have to start the course from scratch So only Foundations and Torts for me this year.

In your case tehazner, did you transfer from commerce or arts into a combined commerce or arts/law degree? If so, does that mean they've condensed your program into 4 years instead of the 5??

I transferred from a combined Commerce/Arts degree lol. I've been able to get 6/8 subjects credited so I can probably still get my degree done in 5 years . What combination with law are you planning on doing?

Thanks guys. I was just curious - Im sure I wont have a problem. And Litany that information was sent to me from the law faculty on getting my UAI which wasn't quite 99.4.

Were you doing that degree at UNSW or did u transfer from another university? At least you were able to get advanced standing for some of your units which is good. I was going to do Science/Law (majoring in computer science or psychology) but decided to go with the generic commerce/law combination...

I was doing my Com/Arts degree at USYD, so I'll be a newbie at UNSW
Haha going with the trend of Com/Law. I have a friend this year at UNSW doing Science/Law. His timetable is so bad... 24+ hours whereas for me I have 16 hours hehe.

Oh right, so you are a fromer USYD student too hey? I've transferred to UNSW after completing 2 years of pharmacy at USYD. Last year I realised the course really wasn't for me and that I didn't want to spend the rest of my life working in some little shop handing out medication all day... In the end I thought I'd take a risk and change to Combined Law as it sounds interesting, plus I did economics back in year 12 and found that quite interesting. How do you feel about transferring from USYD to UNSW? I've been to the kensington campus a few times already to sought out a few things for enrolment and already I miss the feel of usyd haha. Ah well, UNSW is still pretty nice so it shouldnt be that hard to adjust, right? lol Did you try and transfer into USYD combined law or was UNSW your first preference??

Yeah I know the science guys have too many hours congested into their hours... I remember last year I had about 26 hours a week but now I can't believe I've only got about 14 hours of uni a week haha

o0o0o0o Pharmacy!! That's a really high demand course at university. So many applied for it this year! I guess we all don't know what we're doing until after some time, we can only achieve what we want one step at a time

Economics does kind of help you in first year Commerce but they usually cover the year 12 course within 4-5 weeks, and you learn new topics straight after, just a heads up for you.

Personally I like UNSW's campus more than USYD's campus. Despite the endless escalator of stairs, the atmosphere I find is better and also the buildings aren't as worn down as Carslaw. Sheesh, when you sit in Carslaw Lecture Theatres you can feel the seats bending -_-''. Don't get me wrong though USYD is awfully nice but I just find 24/7 construction for the past year to be a bit too much.

USYD and UNSW were on my list, was changing them back and forth constantly. No guesses where I ended up. Well... textbooks for Law and Commerce get released today, fingers crossed they aren't too expensive .
