Hey guys i read some interesting posts on this site and was wondering if the reputation of the university u do med at matter at all if much ?

Say 'person a' graduates with an mbbs from unsw and 'person b' graduates from uws with an mbbs are they on an equal standing ? Would there be any long term affects when it comes to specialisation ect ?

Thanks

I would say that it does not matter except that if you want to study or work in a certain specialization, then it may make a little bit of difference between medical schools, but only because they offer different units within the degree.

Doctors are in demand and therefore employers are looking for intelligent, dilligent and hard-working individuals rather than how 'prestigious' or 'good' the university you went to is.

Things like prestige atm are not considered important for a medical student choosing a uni, but soon there will be a surge in medical students graduating from 2012, therefore prestige might play a more significant role in the future, not quite like it does in professions such as law though.

Aye, this is certainly possible. If, for example, increasing student numbers force the use of interviews, CVs or other 'merit' based systems for intern selection then there will be more room for university to impact selection (via covert 'old boys club' style links). A possible move could be the development of a US-style national medical examination, especially given the likelihood national registration and accreditation.

On the whole you shouldn't expect there to be a significant impact (of your university on specialisation opportunities). A cirtuitous link: it is worth noting that by studying at a university with large, prestigious research institutions and taking part in some kind of research at these institutions while in medical school (e.g. an honours year, or minor research projects) may make entry into a PhD easier, which may then assist entry into more competitive college training programs.

If you had the opportunity to purchase a brand new car over the same priced, same model second hand car, which would you choose?

UWS is nearing 2 years old, while those necos over there in UNSW sit in what looks like a hospital from the movie, A Nightmare On Elm St.

Pres means nothing in Australia. When selecting a university I would focus on the resources, lecturers, achievements and involvment within the community, including its association with local hospitals.

Given that the UNSW program involves compulsory research and is quite strong in research - most likely. However, motivated students can usually make their own opportunities. If a UWS student is keen to do a research year I'm sure they can attach themselves to an academic with a good quality research program.

I will say though that the recent construction of the Lowe facility at UNSW is really something.

The achievements is what really defines a university therefore UNcle would be great, same goes for that university who favours abos. Is that JCU? Tropical approach... Perhaps they should provide their course in the Phil instead of Aust.

Prestige doesn't really matter as much for med as it does for most other occupations (e.g law) I believe.... just go where you're comfortable

Between uws and unsw I would go unsw but I'm attracted to uws because its mbbs course is young..
On a serious note I wouldn't reject an mbbs offer from any nsw university... I know of somebody who chucked a shitty becuz she was rejected by usyd, and her parents sent in letters asking for a full explanation as to y she was rejected... True story that... Apparently she wanted usyd becuz of itz prest, had friends thr and someting about all other med schools aren't made of limestone or someshit... She rejected offers from uncle, unsw and utas.. Hmz.
I sometimz wunda wthr she was offered a place from usyd this year

Unless you're the smartest person in the state, I would be thankful just to get into and pass a medical degree.

Agreed,
go to the orientation days... It's amusing how people describe how torturous the hsc was and how they can't wait to begin their med degree...

Some of them though I see going a long way, smart kids

I put UWS as my first preference, UNSW is nothing special even the people i know who go there say the same.
