Im just curious in exam situations. Do they usually say the equation of the chord is given by....... and then ask you to answer the question???

Or in most cases are we expected to comit it to memory?

you would have to remember how to derive it.

It should specify it... for example the question might say 'Assume the chord of contact is... or Prove the chord of contact is...
