I've missed three tutorials because I got there late, and missed them. I didn't wag them per se.

Even if I past the rest of the course, do I still fail? It says participation is worth 5%, but this seems to contradict it:

It says this:

You are required to attend and participate in all of your scheduled tutorials. In addition to your own exercises, you should explicitly engage with, respond to and initiate discussion around the weekly themes and concepts. You must notify your tutor as soon as possible if you believe you may be absent at any stage. Absence from tutorials without appropriate medical certificates or supporting documentation will result in exclusion from the course.

You should've talked to your tutor, it should've been clear that they marked the roll and attendance was being assessed. Talk to them and if you were genuinely late then there shouldn't be an issue

But does it sound like I'll fail (assuming that they don't care I was late etc...), even if participation only accounts for 5%?

I will talk to my tutor about it. I don't really really recall her talking the role, but if she did, I guess I could lie and just say I was there, and that she didn't notcie. What do you think?

Did you attend those tutorials that you were late for? If not, then you've missed them, your excuse is irrelevant unless you have a medical certificate or other official document to excuse you.

If it was in the unit outline, then the responsibility is upon you to comply with them. I'm not sure if they'll be so strict as to fail you for not participating during tutorials you were away from, but if there is anything in there that says 'cannot miss more than 2 tutorials without official documents' then you have a problem which you have to discuss with the tutor about.

All it says about Participation is what I posted there at the bottom of my first post. What I can't understand is, does exclusion from the course mean you fail? Even if you pass everything else? Please see below. It syas Participation is worth 5%, but it says if you miss them without Certification, exclusion from the course.

Assessment

Tutorial Exercise 15% (Allocated in class)
Essay 1 30% (Thurs April 9)

Essay 2 40% (Tues June 9)
Screening Responses 10% (ongoing)
Participation 5% (ongoing)
TOTAL 100%

Talk to your tutor, but it seems fairly clear that if you missed them without appropriate a) contact with the tutor explaining why you'd missed them b) official documents, then you're up shit creek.

That's not to say you've failed, we don't know the course, nor the strictness of that attendance rule being enforced.

Well all it says about attendance is what I posted. Do you think if I say that the bus was late it will be okay?

No way they should fail you for that. As you said, it only says 5%, and you couldn't help being late. Calm down, talk to your tutor, and if they say they will fail you, appeal it as much as you can.

Appeal what? That despite being given the outline, and being made aware of the fact that attendance was compulsory, that he's missed 3 tutorials without discussing it immediately with the tutor?

Yeah good luck with that.

Chances are they probably won't fail you, but 'being late' is no basis for appeal.

This isn't high school anymore.
lol repped.

It sounds like you were genuinely lazy, because even when im running late. i still attend the class.

You could have walked in , said "sorry im late" and taken a seat, and then mark your name off the list with the acceptance of your tutor.

But it states that participation is only 5%. And thanks Thommy for your support.

Passing isn't simply getting over 50%. They've stated their position on attendance, and you're obviously up shit creek because you're asking about it. Talk to your tutor and get it sorted, but don't presume that you'll be looked at too favourably.

Well how would they expect us to know? I mean, not everyobody read the whole course outline. And I don't know why you're being so mean and rude.

Hey,

You really don't need to make two threads on this. That being said, there's nothing anyone can say here that isn't repeating of what needs to be said:

1. You need to read your entire course outline. There's a reason why it's given to you and is referred to so constantly,
2. you need to complete all assessments. If class attendance is a pass/fail assessment (which it is in this case), you need to notify the tutor. If you are unhappy with what the tutor says, you can see the convener,
3. at university, you're completely in charge of yourself. If you don't do what you're supposed to do, you're screwed.

You need to go talk with the tutor and literally beg for clemency. I see no other course of action, really.

Mean and rude? Because you're trying to make it seem like you're some sort of victim.

I've advised you as to what the best procedure regarding this is, I'm sorry if you don't like the truth, but no one here is your tutor, nor will anyone here (particularly not someone who is a first year ie, thommy) will be in any better position to tell you with any clarity as to what the outcome will be.

I'll repeat it again, go talk to your tutor and get this issue sorted.

The fact is that you're at fault, and ignorance of what was written in the Unit Outline isn't a valid or viable excuse when pleading your case if it does in fact result in you being excluded. The fact is you were given the unit outline, you are expected to read through this, and understand it, the uni is not here to hold your hand when you fuck up, welcome to the real world and responsibility.

Being late for a tutorial because your bus was late isn't a viable excuse, simply put, its your responsibility and your perogative to turn up to classes at a certain time. You don't appear to have made contact with your tutor after each incident, so they didn't know the circumstances, therefore weakening your stance further.

Not really sure what else you expected to hear, perhaps some congratulations?

They've clearly stated that you must attend all classes and that you must talk to your tutor if you miss them and/or present them with relevant and official documents. They've also stated failure to do this would result in exclusion (and which I suggested may be there more as a scare tactic but there are units whose attendance is part of the pass/fail criteria). You would've received the unit outline in the first week, this is week 8-9. You've had that long to read through it, you get no sympathy from me.

You're welcome macca. I do agree about Asylum, he is being quite rude to you.

I'm trying to be nice, and I'm on your side. Participation shouldn't mean you fail.

And Asylum, you could be a bit nicer. Everyone makes mistakes, and accidents do happen.

Participation shouldn't mean you fail.
Firstly, we're not talking about participation. The issue here is clearly attendance. You don't think missing class should mean a fail? That's pretty dumb, don't you think?

Secondly, regardless of what you think should be the case, class attendance is compulsory in essentially every class for reasons which are obvious.
