I want to study music, especially in composition, but it seems that all the music courses at virtually ANY uni ( usyd, unsw etc) requires some prerequisites or some assumed music knowledge from before (ie. HSC Music, AMEB 7th grade..)
So i was just wondering, are there any courses from any uni which teaches you music from the scratch?

cheers

This course doesn't specify any formal qualification as a prerequisite, and you can do your degree without a performance major.

SCU - Arts and Social Sciences - Contemporary Music

I think you'd struggle and wouldn't recommend it though. If you haven't been passionate enough to commit to an instrument as a hobby for a sustained period, is your interest strong enough to sustain a degree?

Try studying some musicology, pick up some of the AMEB grade books and see if you enjoy it and can at least master some of the theory before you commit to a degree.

i know you've said USYD requires prerequisites and if your looking at the Con that's true. But USYD also offers music as a major in the BA program on main campus (there is a separate music department). I don't think this has prerequisites. Anyway the details are here: Sydney University Music Department
