I'm in year 12, and was interested in becoming a sports journalist..

Does this require me to study media and communication, or sports media?

I was looking in the UAC guide and on uni websites, and sport doesn't fall as a subject for media and communications, so i'm abit confused? =S

There were only 2 courses in the UAC Guide offering Sports media within Sydney..?

Any help would be much appreciated..Thank you.

You'd be alright to do a straight media and communication degree if you can show clear interest in sporting - hopefully there is an oppurtunity for you to do some sports orientated journalism in university.

As far as I'm aware the only universities offering sports media or sports journalism as courses are Charles Sturt - Bathurst Campus and University of Canberra.

You should really consider wanting to become a sports journalist, often writers start in a different section of the paper and then move to the sports section. it's quite a hard market to crack, often they only take very experienced writers or people that have been sports stars. I had a family friend that did the course at University of Canberra - he got a few jobs but ended up quitting the industry simply because he was not well-known (as in not an international sports star) and therefore couldn't get any higher up jobs

I wanted to be a sports journalist/commentator etc for a very long time but considering what I mentioned above and other options I've changed my mind.

You'd have to move down there if you wanted to consider those campuses. Driving every day really isn't an option.

you can always do a straight journalism or media course and then specialise later
