hey! so since theres a reasonable concentration of wanabepaulinhanson's on this thread, i thought it would be good to ask a question that i've been dying to ask some ultra patriot aussie.

So i'm basically driving on the highway near penrith right and i pass all these cars with southern cross stickers on their rear windscreen. So i was like wow these guys are patriotic ey, then i started thinking hey these guys are driving hyundais and camrys and stuff right no falcocommodores right?

so guys how come you have the patriotism flowing when your sticking those stars on but don't have the trueblueyness when purchasing a car?

for christsake(cos apparently we cant say buddasake or allahsake cos its inappropriate and i'd be forcing my religion on majority) if you're going to be all vb -aussie-drinking-we-fucked-here-hence-bred-here-youflew-here patriots and stick southo cross stars and get tats atleast buy an aussie made car? its kinda sad isn't it when you buy foreign?
lol fair question.

Let's put it to Bainesy.

I'm an Anglo-Saxon, "white", atheist Aussie "surfer" myself,

But I fucking despise bogans- "Yea braaaaa!"

The irony is, nations like America which are officially legislated as clearly very secular (being a republic), still hold this falsism much closer to their hearts then the average Aussie.

Look around, does religion play any part in our lives at all? It has barely any air time in the Australian public sphere like it does in America.

Note to, I feel many people need to be reminded that:

Secularism =/= Atheism.
Within America, the 'religious right' has much more power, influence and recognition that in Australia. For example, ads on TV funded by Christian groups against gay marriage, the fact that, in some states, they have to teach ID alongside evolution and that someone such as Sarah Palin could gain such a high position, when her politics are so strongly informed by her religion all point to a much more Christian nation than Australia. They even have to mention God/Jesus in their Pledge of Allegiance.

Oh yes, and that is why I feel very sorry for the "minority" of Americans who beleive in the values of the enlightenment and the truth of their constitution. That's why I said its ironic, as America is more "secular" (legally) then say Australia, but not in practice.

Australia, not being a republic, can still be seen to have official ties to the English Church, and we lack a "declaration of independence" (among other documents) like the Americans which strongly outlines that the American founding fathers were fleeing religious persecution and were in the majority either Deists, Atheists or Agnostic.

The day will come though, when we get our republic.

The Queen will dissipate.

I'll help draft our "declaration of independence" and the new constitution which clearly states something in the spirit of:

"Parliment shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

If you're going to be an extreme nationalist, conservative, xenophobic douche then stop buying foreign goods, stop eating foreign foods, and stop using foreign services (wink wink) haaa. I kidz.

No more clothes made in china, no more of my hummus, no more hair cuts from the Papadopolous hair salon, no MORE nothing.

Without us ethnics, you are nothing.

And brosephs, your inner nationalist/patriot is so out of line. Read this verse of the anthem:

Beneath our radiant southern Cross,
We'll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing
"Advance Australia fair!"

Ah guys, stop hurling insults at each other. Keysar Trad is not stupid, he knows how to play with words. He simply says it should be "recognised". What he really means is it should be a public holiday. Again, it comes down to the individual. Just work it out with your boss. If your boss is reasonable, they'll give you a day off (assuming you give them enough notice that is). If they aren't reasonable, do you really want to be working for them?

the thing is, muslims get christian holidays off, we would have to get muslim holidaysw off and if we did this, every other religion would want their holdays off and eventually every day would be a public holiday. the official religion of australia is still christian i believe and i don''t think we can change this without becoming a republic
what is this? I don't think so...

don't get me started on the seperation of church and state. Religion should not be encouraged by the state, thats irresponsible. Its baaaadd for you

also, the solution is no public holidays at all. See if the risk of that shuts them up.

I really don't see anything wrong with individuals being able to take time off work for their respective religious holidays. I'd just chuck a sickie if it was me, but if people want their religious festivals or whatever to be recognised as legitimate reasons for not going to work a few days a year then whatever, good on them, don't care go ahead.

Don't agree with making Muslim holidays public holidays because what's the point in making a national public holiday for something that only applies to a minority? I have no problem with Christmas, Easter etc because pretty much everyone celebrates it in some way (hello, presents? yay!) unless they actually have a strong alternative religious belief. Noone celebrates Muslim holidays except Muslims, so it should be on an individual basis negotiated with their boss or whoever.

Businesses should be able to trade whenever the hell they want, also, regardless of who's religious thingy is on.

No

Absolutely No, not as public holidays. There're unlimited numbers of cultures, just can't make them all public holidays

Even christmas etc are not religious holidays any more for most people. They are just names of the established public holidays and they are just historic heritages.

Just wondering why some groups of people are so arrogant and narrow thinking that they are the only important people in the world and should enjoy privileges, constantly demanding the rest the world to give them what they are not entitled to.

Definitely no compromise

If we were to allow any specific religious holidays into the system, then a huge upraor would begin on letting more in.

Christams and Easter has always been accepted and by non-religious people and other religions as many do not celebrate the Christian aspects to these days. Although, these are recognised as Christain holidays I guess.

Probably because over 80% of Australia would be Christian linked or non-religious... Since Australia is very democratic (and the parlimentary ministers and all Christian/non-religious) the holidays in Australia are accepted.

If they don't like the employers refusing their holiday break, then find another job.
If they hate this country, then leave this country

We should get rid of all public holidays. People should negotiate what days they have off with their employers.

Enough public holidays as it is.

If you don't want to work on a particular day each year and you're employer won't let you have it off, then find someone new to work for.

It's not always that easy to find another job, especially in the current economic climate (with 5.9% unemployment), and "hating" the country is obviously not the issue here. It is a sad day when people think that dissent stems from a lack of patriotism. Part of loving this country is about making it a better place for everyone, not just the moral majority. It is on this principal that our entire culture is based. ...at least, I hoped it was.

Just wondering why some groups of people are so arrogant and narrow thinking that they are the only important people in the world and should enjoy privileges, constantly demanding the rest the world to give them what they are not entitled to.

Yes, its a shame, isn't it? When people think belonging to a majority gives them the right to have their culture recognised officially, but refuse to "comprimise" on, and seem almost frightened by the very idea of something as insignificant and harmless to their daily lives as the recognition of religious ceremonies that they are not familiar with.
Really makes you wonder about how far we've really come regarding secularism, multiculturalism, and basic compassion and empathy (regardless of a culture's representation in our society).

(Also wonder how people would treat this differently if the Muslim holidays were half as lucrative as the fat cats' wet dream that is Christmas.)

Oh, and yes.

How about "Just leave" day? Far simpler.
I like.
This country is gradually conforming to an Islamic way of life, and the politicians are letting it. I am christian born in Sudan, an Islamic country. My family left because we got so fucking sick of their imposition of Islamic laws. We came to Australia and they followed us here, and now they want to lay their stupid laws on us again. Fuck then. They leave their islamic countries because of the demeaning and harsh way of life, they come to promising countrys like australia, only to request the same fkn laws that fucked up tehir home country. Go home if u want that.
