At the moment I'm finding the Physics course pretty boring, however don't wanna restrict myself as to what I can do at uni by dropping it.. but I've sorta realised that 4U mechanics seems to be more pure physics anyway, so hopefully I should be alright doing uni physics with just 4U math.

Yeah more maths in physics and chemistry. They should put calculus in the Physics course. If you do general Maths or no maths you shouldn't be doing physics imo.

Sydney University accepts students into a Bachelor of Science (Physics) and a Bachelor of Advanced Science (Physics) even when they have not done HSC physics. It's not a requirement, after all, there are no prerequisites in this day and age (at least in New South Wales).

For a Bachelor of Science, whatever you major in, unis just recommend advanced (2 Unit) maths. An HSC science course gives you background knowledge, but you don't need it and it may slow you down in the HSC...esp. if you don't like it ...

Edit: oh and not to forget, maths IS a science course! A very "specialised" and prestigious science at that.

What do you reckon would be better for an engineering degree, 4U mechanics or HSC Physics? Obviously it might vary depending on what stream of eng you pick, but I've heard that uni physics is really math-based.

Although it's unlikely I'll do engineering anyway as opposed to science, but still interesting.

Assumed knowledge does not translate to "if you didn't do this you will do shit in the course for sure". I spoke to a person I know who does Physio at USYD, she's called Caitilin. She's told my mum or me (can't remember who) "physics is very helpful" - she did Year 11 physics only. She didn't do HSC (Year 12) physics and she is doing very well in the course... definitely not doing shit/failing.

A lot of people don't find out the true meaning of 'assumed knowledge' until they begin a university degree course, it seems...

Well technically engineering is a science, but good on you. From reading Fitzpatrick 4U and Jacaranda HSC Physics... 4U Mechanics would be better, for sure

HSC Physics has little red and white graphs of waves/parabolas, lol

Yep, 4U maths is great preparation for engineering while HSC physics is nearly useless.

I didn't say that, of course you won't definetly fail. But I imagine you would be in a better position than those who didn't do Physics.

Anyway, it seems that BoSers are in general agree that extension mathematics courses prepare you for a BE better than HSC physics.

Oh and is it just me, or are the modules the Board of Studies chose for HSC chemistry really boring? And I have researched them... not just saying this for controversy...


I wrote down the areas of study or modules I would choose for HSC chemistry (some are taken from the International Baccaulaureate Diploma chemistry course):

I. The Chemical Earth
II. Stoichiometry (the study of chemical reactions, including heavy maths on rates of reaction and decomposition - taken from IB diploma Chem
III. Periodicity - taken from IB
IV. Medicines and Drugs - taken from IB

HSC course - prescribed focus areas
V. Neuroscience Foundation study
VI. Anatomy and Physiology Foundation study (but this qualifies more for a biology course of study... o well..)

Edit: LOL I'm in love with IB Chem... so much more interesting than the HSC version!
