Nothing. It's the people who cheat and knock aside anyone to get it ( the cut throat kind of people) that piss me off

at the top end of ANY career this is the same not just law. You think that doctors aren't arrogant in med- i know some1 who is doing a surgical residency- the arrogance is insane. Even when ur established, its cut troat over who has the best rep, most successful etc.

Financial jobs= highly competitive= cut throat

Its basically like this at the high end of any professional job- where there is big money, there is big reps andlots of pressure. You gotta learn to take this in your stride or you'll never be successful.

I have no real problem with law students generally. Obviously some are going to be arseholes but thats a minority.

i was in law and escaped after a semester because i was there because i could be there, not because i wanted to be there. most people i came across were pretty decent but there were a few choice dickheads in tutes. there was one guy who had actually contacted a law firm to verify that there was a slight (and i mean slight) error in the homework assignment. the same dickhead also flirted with the tutor (he was a mature age student) by reciting parts of the australian constitution.i was like:rofl: when her breathing became more rapid after every part he recited.

I'll add some.

1. Professors whose exams have typos in them. I swear to god, every long hypothetical I've ever taken has had some glaring typo. I think they're intentional. eg: 'Alex contracts with Barry to pay him $10 in exchange for a piece of land. Alex pays the ten dollars but Barry neglects to transfer the land. Advise Barry as to the remedies available to him." <---- YOU MEAN ALEX, RIGHT? PROOFREAD YOUR GOD DAMN HYPOS!!

2. People who name drop.

3. People who use 'inter alia' in ANY situation. I don't care if you were raised speaking Latin.

4. People who go to the law library to people-watch and socialise over IM programs. Get the fuck out you whores. This is especially bad during exam season. Mind you, this also happened in VCE. People would "hang out" at the state library. What the fuck? If you want to hang out, go to a bar or a sports event or anywhere that's not meant for quiet serious study.

Someone asked if you were a first year. Is that true? I am beginning to wonder if you speak out of your depth. It is dangerous for people starting out to make such grand pronouncements of wankery. I am in the latter stages of law now, and I have actually been taught that yes, there is a difference between justice and law. It was Lincoln who said "You must remember some things legally right are not morally right." Only an idealist (or a fool) would conflate the two.

We go to law school to learn about the law - not only the substantive law, but also about the ethical facets of law. We are taught in legal ethics that our highest duty is to court and the overriding commandment is not to mislead the court. Thus, there are limits to how far you can 'exploit' a loophole. Not to mention that there aren't really that many loopholes to exploit. I don't think JackMurray was speaking out of turn and I agree with him.

It might be foolish to conflate justice and the law but it is simplistic wankery to separate them and state that you study 'law' as if it operated to the exclusion of justice.

EDIT: wow, I just realised this thread is 2 yrs old. Oh well.

I dislike the students who take offence at little irrelevant things that were meant as a joke. There was this girl who jokingly said that jury duty was "for those who were too stupid to get out of it" (her words, not mine). I'm pretty sure it was meant as a joke because most people in the tutorial just chuckled for a second. One girl, however, took great offence and started ranting that she has worked in the courts part time, and has the greatest repect for jurors because their role in society is so monumental yadda yadda yadda.

I mean, this was a tutorial where we are supposed to discuss the work at hand, not listen to two big-mouths get into an argument over jury duty.

This next comment isn't about law students as such, but about any student who considers themselves to be "great intellectuals".

Some students will eye you up and down if you are dressed fashionably, almost as if they are trying to figure out what 'someone like you' is doing in a 'smart person's course'. I actually find that some (not all!) students have a certain idea of what a 'smart person' should look like, and if you don't meet that stereotype, you are instantly classed as being a 'bimbo!'

I do law and most other law students I know are nice, and don't aggravate others. You do get the minority who make everyone else look bad!
