if someone gets a better ranking for example by 3 positions in a subject, is it possible to get a better mark for that subject then them if you beat them in the HSC exam?

but dont they say if you get ranked for example 5th in a subject you get the 5th best mark regardless of your HSC exam mark

Your final mark is broken into an internal and an external mark. So your own exam mark counts as your external mark. It's only the internal mark that things shift because of ranks.

Therefore, if you score significantly higher externally, your combined score could easily be higher than their mark.
