Is there any chance of my friend and I getting above 90 for my ATAR? (These are approximations).

Friends Ranks-
English Adv: 27/97
Maths 2U: 30/90
Eco: 21/32
Physics: 17/30
Chem: 23/54

My Ranks-
English Adv: 12/97
Maths 2U: 38/97
Eco: 25/31
Physics: 26/30
Senior science: 7/16

We're getting like in the 60's approximately.

If we work out butts off, and get band 6's or band 5's in the HSC... is there a chance of getting at least in the 80's? ... or 90's?

Or did we screw up big time?

Assuming your school is ranked between 76 and 100, I'd say 85ish for you and your friend.

yeahh... we're getting in the 60's or 70's... for some assessments we got in the 80's. But mostly we're getting very low.

If you want 90, you put yourself in a position where you're going to have to work exceptionally hard to achieve your goal.

Doesnt matter, its all about rankings. Its better to becoming first in a subject with 60% then to become 10th in a subject with 90%.
Why is it like that?? I thought it would be better since your getting a higher mark, how come its all about the rankings? could you kindly explain? cheers :)

Because BOS uses your rankings to determine your internal marks. You're raw internal percentages are only used to moderate the gaps between people ie. If I'm coming first in a subject by 10%, my final moderated internal mark will reflect that. I think shadowdude might be able to explain it better.

Oh I sort of see what you mean, so basically the mark you get has too also reflect your assesment mark? But can you please explain this shadowdude if you want :)

At this stage a 90 doesn't look very likely. An 80 at least is a given, though.

Just work hard for the externals and just know that you put in your best effort, you could see a mark of high 80s

Im coming 2nd in a subject only by 0.4 marks, what significant change does this have on my modertated internal assesment mark after the external exams? If i were to get 95 in externals and the 2nd highest mark would be 75, do i still get that 75 because im ranked 2nd by only 0.4 marks? Or is there more to it cos of the closeness of the ranks

The gaps in ranks are taken into consideration when moderating internal marks. If you got the highest with 95, but were coming 2nd by 0.4 marks, you would probably get 94 as your internal I think.

No, you would get a moderated internal mark which reflects the 0.4 gap.

using the example i gave before, if i came 2nd internally and got the highest mark of 95 in the externals, and 2nd highest mark was 75. What would my internal mark be moderated to roughly?

Its hard to say because the moderation process is very complex and you would need to know the marks of the rest of the cohort. Try looking in the link I posted previously, this might provide you with a more accurate idea as to how the process works.
