Ok so I have a question, I am just wondering people are saying it is better to be coming 2nd in a subject with 60% than coming like 5th or something with 90% can you tell me why? Because wouldn't that person who is getting 90% have a better chance externally since he is performing better to the person who is coming 2nd who is on 60%?

Can someone please explain how this works as I am still unsure about the moderation on the BOS website :) it would be great if someone could explain this too me!

cheers :)

It depends, schools often set exams of varying difficulty and mark in different ways. Thats why rankings are used to calculate internal marks and not raw percentages. For example, when I was doing my trials, I came first in modern at my school with a trial mark of 84/100. At my friends school where they did the same trial, the top 3 marks were all in the 90's. For the final marks however, none of them ended up getting a band 6 for modern, whilst I did. This is because in all likelyhood, the marking at the girls school was much more lenient than the marking at mine (this is probably true, since the markers at our school were both HSC markers, with one being a serior marker). So thats why BOS doesnt really use raw percentages.

As for the process of moderation, I'm not really good at explaining it, but basically the internal marks are moderated according to a cohorts external marks. Shadowdude is probably the best person to explain the process, as he knows much more about it.
