This was apart of homework that was supposed to be done without the knowledge of sum and product of the roots.

Just using the factor, remainder and multiple root theorem (P(alpha) = P'(alpha) = 0 if alpha is a double root).

You can then do whatever you need to get alpha.

How do you know that x cannot equal to 0?

I can't tell when it is appropriate to multiply expressions by x in order to use it..

(This question should state that But are constants. I think he typed the question wrong, you will need to ask him for confirmation. But generally those values won't equal to or else you can just say is a root for every question you get.)

This cannot be true. In general this is a very famous technique to eliminate the leading term. I just multiplied by a common multiple to make all leading coefficients equal.
