Reports: If your rank sounds low but mark is good, is that bad? (1 Viewer)

Hey,

Well I received my report in the mail today and just wanted to inquire about a few things.

I mean with everything I am really happy yet for Modern History I was not so happy. My ranks so far are:

English Advanced: 4/23

Society and Culture: 3/11

Studies of religion: 1/11

History Extension: no rank however at the moment I am 1/4

Legal studies: 6/12 (pretty happy but I want to try harder)

Modern History: 7/10 (Not very happy)

For modern history though my course mark is 24/30 (80%) Which I don't believe to be too bad.

Should I be concerned though? Because that rank sounds pretty low yet the mark isn't too bad?

How do you compare whether a test was easy or not?

Well only person in my class received 90% and then it was 89% and so on.

I would say the test (in class essay on Weimer Republic) was quite hard, yet it depends on each person really.

Well if the spacing between first and where you are is small, then that's okay. But you should really try to improve your rank.

To be honest I have no idea, however I am sure it is not ranked too high. Where could I see the ranking?

Well if a person's rank is 3rd yet their mark is not so good, does that mean they will still do well just because their rank is good?

Okay I checked on a website named 'better education' and it said this :

The school was named top 200 schools, 2007 Top 200 School Rankings (HSC) in NSW. (this is obviously not updated how can I find an updated version??

So I see the ranks are in the 200's range.

You should be fine. Ranks are important in terms of the GAPS between the ranks.

For example,
If the ranks are as follows:
1 - 95%
2- 94%
3- 62%
4 - 61%
21 -51%
Then the person coming 2nd would have their mark moderated down as to create an even distribution of marks.

However, if they look like this:

1- 93%
2- 92%
3- 90%
4- 89%
21-48%

There is not that much to worry about (except the outlier would probably be asked to drop).

Someone tell me if i'm wrong

I would've thought that since person 2 is so close to person 1, their internal marks would be close together? Doesn't sound fair if person 2 got 94 and then it got moderated down to 80 or something

History Extension: Don't know how to calculate for ext but my mark 4.5/5 (this was only a proposal)

Legal Studies: 80%

I mean I know it is pretty early in the course and there is still other assessments to go plus trials. I want to improve legal and modern but am I in a disadvantage at the moment?

What you have to understand is that your marks mean nothing - its the RANK thats the only thing that matters.

A 80% at a rank 200 school is not the same as an 80% at James Ruse, if you get what I'm saying

No, that's wrong.

If this is about the same after the HSC exams, then rank 1 and 2 are outliers and they are separately moderated. But that's beside the point; assessment marks are determined using the mean and deviation of marks from the mean. In this case, rank 1 and 2 have pretty much the same deviation, hence they will get the same assessment mark or minutely close.

There are no "even distribution of marks"; there are "equivalent distribution of marks" compared to raw mark performance.
